Moving into cot

DD currently sleeps in a crib but we want to move her into her cot soon ish.

She has bumpers on her crib which are at her head level, because of size of crib and size of her. She holds onto the bumpers and sucks them when she's going off to sleep or a bit disturbed in the night.
I took them off to wash and she was really disturbed so basically I ended up putting it back on damp. So I think she needs something around her making her feel enclosed, and something to hold and suck.

When we move her into her cot I don't know what to do. All the cot bumpers just sit at the head of the cot and she will be right down the bottom. The lady in mamas and papas said why not just attach the bumper half way down the cot. But my fear if we do that is she could wriggle up a bit and her face end up under the bumper.

Sorry this is a bit garbled. Does anybody have any ideas for what I can do? I toted with attaching Muslims to the side of the cot somehow...

Oops must proof read in future. I toyed with attaching muslins

I have no intention of attaching people of any religion to my daughter's cot!!

Blooming auto correct.

What about something like this?

I don't think actual bumpers are recommended now a days though are they? I may be wrong though.

And then a separate muslin for her to suck?

I was going to suggest the same thing, I have this one www.safedreams.co.uk, it really helps to make them feel enclosed and they don't have the suffocation risk either. I can't understand why they don't sell them in shops like M&Ps.

I thought cot bumpers were a cot-death risk?! I wouldn't use them and think you ought to check this out and find an alternative.

My 15 week old DD sleeps in a grobag with no blankets in her cot so she's up at the top.

Maybe this would work for yours, then she'd be near her bumper?

mama2alex · 16/01/2011 12:57

This is a strange one as in the UK they are not a cot death risk according to FSID but in the US (where i'm from) they are! The US ones are a bit thicker but I don't understand why they don't warn against them more.

From what I have read they have been in the past perceived as a risk due to them apparently making the baby warmer, but this is not thought to be true now.

Anyway, I have always wondered why bumpers would make a baby overheat when A) cots are totally open otherwise so plenty of air can circulate and B) if bumpers restrict air flow then why would moses baskets not do the same?

Thanks those are great suggestions.
Pleased to cause amusement ticketyboo Smile

Cot bumpers aren't a SIDS risk (according to FSIDS), but they can pose a suffocation risk. Other possible worries are strangulation with loose ties and the baby using them to climb out of the cot.
