Why doesn't my son talk?

My ds1 is 2.8 years old and still doesn't talk apart from 2 words. Does anyone else have the same concern re their child not talking? Is this very abnormal?

Which two words does he say? Does he communicate in other ways - pointing, eye contact etc?

Does he make a range of sounds.

What does your HV say - has his hearing been checked?

He has got a hearing test next week and got his name down to see language and speech therapist when sessions will hopefully start in march. Yes he points and let's me know when there is something he wants by either bringing it to me or taking me to it. Just want to know what's gone wrong? Should I be reading more to him? Should I not allow him to watch so much tv?

Some children are just slower at learning how to talk then others, in rare cases it may be due to lack of parental attention but mostly it's just because children are all different and develop at different rates.

In any case it's a good idea to talk more and read more to your child.

Belgo - meant to say his 2 words are car and juice

Car and juice - similar to my ds!

Does he say mummy/daddy?

sleepyhorse · 12/01/2011 15:12

No but what is weird is that he used to call me mummy. How old is your son?

My ds is 2.3 years. He is fine with speech as far; it was my dd1 who was very slow and it turned out she had a hearing problem.

sleepyhorse · 12/01/2011 15:16

Oh ok. Is it very common for children to have hearing problems?

Yes, many children need grommets, especially if they are prone to ear infections.

Ok well I guess I will find out soon enough when he has his appointment next week

Hope the appointment goes well. No need to worry until you hear otherwise but good to keep on top of everything.

to reassure My DS1 did not talk until he was a similar age (just 3 or 4 words) we had dreadful times with him, poor lad was so frustrated. All at once he started talking completely fluently and at the same level as his peers.
