My 11 year old wants a mobile phone for her birthday but we've said she has to wait until secondary school, so

instead she said she'd like an iPod touch Shock

I really don't like all the "too-much-too-soon" that goes on with kids. All her friends have mobile phones Hmm but I just don't think it's necessary when she never goes anywhere on her own.

So apparently there's a text-like facility on the iPod, but £175 when she'll probably lose it?
Is there a compromise?

Thanks Pixie, she has had a shuffle for a couple of years but doesn't like that she can't choose which song to play. I'll suggest the nano.

We do have Skype but the only person who uses it at present is my dh. Good idea there.

I had a no mobile until secondary school rule for my boys and I'm aware that very few 11 year olds do not have one.
The ipod touch has wi fi internet which is useful but no text/phone features. It is a very neat gadget, the games are cheap and plentiful. It is as you say very expensive and I certainly wouldn't let it go to school.

I think secondary school is the right time for a mobile phone as she is never on her own, and if thats what you told her stick to it, else you'll open all sorts of floodgates.

My DD is 10, and she would lose iPod or mobile..

And like you I disagree with the "too much too soon" culture; waiting won't harm them!!
