Help! I don't want to fail at reusables...

For the last two months I've had to go back to disposables as I've had so many leakage issues with Bumgenius V3s.

They wick terribly, so if I don't change DD within about 90 mins, she's soaked through her vest and trousers right the way round her legs.

I've tried numerous strip washes, didn't really change anything. So I let the nappies out a size (we're now on the biggest setting) and had the same problems. I've tried DD in a bigger vest, and it still hasn't fixed it.

She used to be able to wear them all through the night, with the newborn insert/booster pad.

I love the BG because they're easy to wash, dry quickly, not too bulky and simple to put on.

Is there something I haven't tried yet? Or do I need to try a different sort of nappy?

Sorry it's been long, but TIA

What at your bumgenious made of?

I used to boost my bumbles and then add an extra booster betweent the outside of the nappy and the wrap. That was for daytime use btw.

What wraps are you using?

CarGirl · 02/01/2011 19:40

Ahh they are in all in one Sad you may have to move to a 2 part system I'm afraid.

CarGirl · 02/01/2011 19:45

I'd get some bumbles either terry or microfibre and some hemp or bamboo boosters. The boosters will take a while to dry as they are much more absorbant fabrics but you could buy more boosters than nappies IYSWIM.

You could just buy the eco bumbles £3 each.

Motherease air flow wraps are the most reliable wrap ever.

I think maybe the BG V3 just don't suit your DD and you need to try another nappy. I have the BG and have used them on both babies fine with no wicking or leaking, but have tried other nappies that friends have loved and not got on with them at all.

I would try something like a Pop-In Dream Dri for similar ease of use as the BG V3 and very quick drying, maybe just buy one and see if its any good for DD and then maybe try a two parter - but whilst a two parter are more leak proof if you get a good wrap they are more of a pain in the ass tbh!

Hevster · 02/01/2011 20:19

I had similar issues with BG V3 and have switched to Itti Bittis and Wonderoo V2 and no leaks whatsoever, If you wanted cheaper and quick drying the BG Flips are excellent as well. I use tots bots bamboozle stretch at night and again no leaks so far.

Thanks all, you certainly know your stuff!

I'll definitely have a look at these suggestions. Is there a good place I can beg/borrow/buy second hands ones from so I don't waste too much money trying different ones out?

Speaking of which, where's a good place to sell second hand nappies? Apart from ebay.

There is a cloth nappy auction site but I can't remember the name Blush

You can ask on the buy & sell nappies board here. There are other forums with much busier nappy B&S boards than this one.

Cloth nappy addicts is one dedicated one Grin

Just read Hevsters post and it reminded me that our Wonderoos are excellent, they have never ever leaked for me but they are quite big and they were to big for my newborn, even at a couple of months old, though she was quite skinny. Can't fault them on a bigger baby though.

swampster · 02/01/2011 22:13

A little more boosting may well sort you out without having to do anything so drastic as selling all your BGs.

I always use the big BG insert together with with a bamboo booster and find BGs a lot more reliable than Ittis though I much prefer Ittis.

For second hand nappies there is also here, Cloth Nappy Tree, Cloth Nappy Addicts and UKPL. And Netmums.

Pingpong · 02/01/2011 22:27

Before you give up on BG v3 altogether you could try boosting them with a Little Lamb bamboo booster (size 2 is better than size 1) it is a really good fit in BG v3 and if you use the microfibre one on top and the bamboo underneath I found that it made a big difference.
What age is your DD?
I have recently been using Cloth Nappy Tree to buy and sell nappies - there are lots of tickers and abundance of huns but if you can rise above that it is quite fast moving and you can ask that buyers pay for paypal fees and postage.

I don't rate pop in dream dris (- well I did for a while and bought some more which I'm getting rid of now.) Although they are BTP I found they were getting small on DD1 before she was ready to potty train so I was using them on DD2 but she out pees them very quickly. The bamboo ones are better but take ages to dry.

Others to consider are Totsbots Easyfit v2 - they are available in some larger branches of Tesco now. They are all in ones (BTP) with bamboo and microfibre and a pocket that can be boosted further if required. They are very slim fitting as well if that is a factor for you.

I also like Totsbots bamboozles (I have some old style and some stretchies) with a Motherease Rikki wrap. I use these at night but if your DD is a heavy wetter maybe you need that for day time use? They are bulkier though, fine under a dress or leggings but you might struggle to get them on under normal sized trousers.

Pingpong · 02/01/2011 22:29

Grin at swampster I think we have agreed on LL boosters before for BG v3s!
sorry for x post I started this and then had to go and feed DD2....

DancingThroughLife · 02/01/2011 23:32

Oops, just realised I missed that bit Smac.

She's 7 months, sitting and crawling now. She was in her BGs from 1 month to 5 months. I let them out to the biggest setting to try and get around the bulk in her smaller vests, but I've just realised I didn't take them back in when I tried bigger vests.

I'll try that, then see if the bamboo booster helps. So would I use a Little Lamb booster as well as the normal BG insert?

Love the Netmums as an afterthought swampster Grin

I'm happy to carry on with a disposable at night for now, but I really hate the thought of using them all the time. I've used over 200 in the last couple of months Shock when I could have just been washing the ones I've got.

Thanks for helping out everyone. I really don't want to give up on them!

Pingpong · 03/01/2011 10:13

yes use the big BG microfibre insert with a bamboo booster underneath. Microfibre is good for soaking up but can be a bit spongy which causes leaks but if you have the bamboo underneath it should soak up a lot more than the microfibre but without adding too much more bulk.
Do you use both of the inserts together now?

DancingThroughLife · 03/01/2011 13:38

Thanks! Off to order some bamboo inserts now.

I was using both inserts overnight, but during the day it was very bulky underneath her vests, which I think added to the wicking problem. Now she's moving as well, I don't know how the bulk will affect her. We'll see how she goes. Today I've gone down a popper size again, to see how that works. It seems to be going ok, but she just did a rather large poo.

Which leads me onto my one last question and I promise that's it! Can I use flushable liners in BG? Smile

swampster · 03/01/2011 23:26

Yes to flushable liners.

ziggyf · 04/01/2011 19:37

Definitely try boosting them, I had a similar problem with Tots Bots Easyfits and since I've started boosting them they have gone back to being bombproof again. Saying that, I had all sorts of problems with BGs - I really didn't get on with them. 2 part systems are certainly more reliable if you are thinking of changing the nappies you use.

StoneBaby · 05/01/2011 19:45

Can they leak because they are at the biggest setting and therefore your DD is not 'snugged' enough into them IYSWIM?

My DS is 11 months in BG v3 and they are still on the middle setting. I use the LL bamboo insert at night with the large and newborn BG inserts. You can use the flushable liners on them too.

Good luck! [smlie]

DancingThroughLife · 06/01/2011 09:33

I thought that stonebaby. I've put them back down to the middle setting and it seems to have helped - the wicking isn't nearly as bad as it was.

How often did you change your DS at 7 months? I think for a while, DD wasn't very wet, so she would go for about 4 hours before needing a change. Now I'm making sure I do it after 2 hours at the longest.

I'll try the LL boosters too, and see where that gets us. I think I've got my confidence back with them now, but at least I know I could switch to a 2 parter if I need to.

Thanks everyone Smile

CharlottesClan · 06/01/2011 21:55

just wanted to add try an easy peasy hemp booster. they are cheap as chips and are brilliant in bgs as they are exactly the same shape and nearly the same length as the microfibre bg insets :)
