Just Need Some Reassurance

Hi there - I wasn't sure whether to post this under weaning or health, but thought this section gets more traffic.

My DD is 7 months, and I have been weaning her since she was 6 months. But she has only really got the hang of it in the last week or so and does now seem hungry for her food, opeining her mouth when the spoon comes etc.

I am feeding her purees, and vaguely following Gina Ford, and using some Annabel Karmel recipes.

Today was only the second day that she has had 2 meals - lunch and tea. Lunch was a fromage frais, then tea at 5pm was chicken, apple and sweet potato. Just after 6pm she had a full milk feed of 8oz and vomited up the whole lot! Including some undigested tea.

So was it too much too soon or just one of those things? I will also add that she is very phlegmy at the mo and was very restless last night due to this. So my initial reaction was that the phlegm in her tummy had made her sick but I am also thinking maybe she is not happy about something she ate? Today was the first time she had the sweet potato, all the other stuff she has had before.

I am probably overthinking this, but when she is sick like this (which is rare for her) it makes me feel quite worried, hence the title of the thread.

So any comments greatfully recieved. Thanks

Hi Flossie,

When my dd was around the same age she threw up so much after a meal I took her to hospital! Unfortunately it was butternut squash as well, not easy to get out Grin I know it's worrying when there is a lot of sick but it could be combination of things that made her sick. If she seems okay tomorrow try her with the sweet potato by itself and then you'll get a better idea if that was the culprit. To me it sounds like maybe a bit too much for her and she was just getting rid of what she couldn't digest. Might be an idea to try her with new foods at lunch time or breakfast rather then the evening, that way if she reacts you have more time during the day to get it sorted iyswim. Hope this helps reassure you a bit :)

Hi Flossie - so weorrying when they do things like this, isn't it? My 2 year old ds spent the whole night last night being sick which I think was food related but you can never be totally sure.

In your dd's case, I would suspect that it was because of the phlegm that she's got...it makes them gag and then be sick. Has she been sick since - or was it just the once?

I would see how she goes - I reckon it's unlikely to be the sweet potato as that is fairly bland but just keep a food diary just in case and introduce new foods slowly.

Hopefully it was because of her cough and phlegm and a one off. But perhaps you could also look at the timings of the meals so that she has more time between tea and the milk feed as it does sound a little close together. However, given that she drank it all, means that she wanted it...in general, they don't tend to take in more than they want.

Good luck - sounds like you're doing fine and hopefully was a one off.

Probably is the phlegm. Tomorrow I'd just go back to the one meal at lunchtime if I were you.

Have you thought about BLW? Having weaned 2DC one with purees and one BLW I'd say BLW is just soooo much easier.

Hope she feels better soon.

Hi Knackered & lucky - thanks for your replies. She has not been sick since - I gave her some water after this and she is now asleep. She seemed quite content after too, even with DH trying to change her whilst I jumped in the shower (after removing a bra full of sick.......)

I will try to give her tea earlier - she is always really hungry and tired by 6pm, so I can't really move that feed back.

Hi JJJ have looked at BLW, and am just not sure about it! Did purees wth DS, now 11, and got on ok, so thought I would do the same. I do try to make sure I go at DD's pace, and only give the purees when she has her mouth open, ie is wanting it.

The teatime meal is the one more established, as she always seems hungrier at this time of day, but maybe I could give her a bigger lunch and smaller tea.

Why not try a bit of both? They aren't mutually exclusive afterall Smile

You could give her some puree and then some finger food while you get on with eating your tea.

13lucky · 30/12/2010 20:42

I'd stick with the two meals - I think it's probably a coincidence with it being the first day you've introduced two meals...it doesn't sound like too much to me. I think you were just unlucky. But see how she goes and keep a note of which foods you're giving her. And yes, perhaps introduce new foods at lunchtime rather than teatime. Hope she is ok tomorrow. I didn't like the weaning stuff with my two - so much easier when they can eat 'normal' food!

Hi

Might be worth introducing one new food at a time- then going the whole week with just that. Ie maybe pureed pears for 1 week, then introduce pureed sweet potato the next week, which you alternate with the pear, and so on. When my ds (now nearly 3) started solids thats what I did - sounds boring, but they say the little digestive systems take time to adjust to each new food. Worked for him (he adored his pear puree- its meant to be one of the most gentle first foods). Its also a lot easier on the preparation front - you can make up a whole week's suppply and freeze it.
Hope things get better.

possibly you gave her slightly too much? reduce the dinner portion a bit unless she seems really hungry?
my ds at that age if i gave him even one spoonful too much he would just puke out the lot so had to judge it very carefully, luckily he has grown out of it now he is 1. i wouldn't worry too much, she is only small and still quite new to food it can take them a while to settle down with it?

TickettyBoo · 02/01/2011 22:21

We had the same reaction to peppers in food so am eliminating these and will try them again soon to see if she is ok with them next-time (lo is 7.5 months, but did wean from around 5 months).

We did as lightwind suggests and introduced single tastes to start with such as pureed carrot, pear, apple etc - and then started to mix flavours when happy lo liked them.

Sounds like you're doing fine and maybe she was just a bit over-full (if she's anything like my greedy monkey lol)

xx
