Erm, about four/five years ago. The damage that prolonged use can do to teeth is irreversible.

he has autism and is still like a baby, so i;m not sure how to explain to him he has to give it up. he only has it at night to settle him to sleep but i dont want him still using it when he grows up

Herm...erm that's a bit of a massive omission, don't you think?

So I've hear that dummies are an addiction and you need to swap it with something. What about a kids MP3? (it doesn't get too loud) or a dvd/cd player for his room?
