Smelly micofibre nappies and wraps

My flexitot nappies are coming out of the wash with the microfibre bit smelling grim and musty, and the PUL wraps still smell of wee, so I have to put them through again with a load of clothes. The cotton nappies are fine.

The flexitots have been a complete pain for the past year, very quickly starting to smell of ammonia once weed in and with all the different things I tried only partly sorting the problem. So I could bin them completely and get more second hand cotton ones, but the wraps smelling is a new development that I'm not happy about!

I use Ecover (either bio or non-bio) and have just started putting Bio-D nappy sanitiser in with them, so I can wash at 40 all the time.

Is there anything obvious I should be doing? I am so fed up with these nappies.

Many thanks.

I found that a normal wash with a few cap fulls of vinegar and then a hot wash with a normal bio powder like Persil sorted out the MF nappies/inserts.

Wouldn't do that on the wraps though (or natural fibres like cotton/bamboo), maybe soak them overnight in the Bio-D?

Using totsbots potion should work.... its anti-bacterial and specially formulated for use at 40 degrees with smelly nappies!

Can I suggest stopping using Ecover . Basically all of my clothes were startign to smell like belly button lint all musty and gross.
I;ve changed to the tesco ecover equvilant and the smell has just disappeared. this happened to a friend at work also.
I use ecover for all my other cleaning products cause it works and smells great but i find the washing stuff leaves clothes smelling gross

Thanks. I might try a different washing powder then. And will try Scherbatsky's suggestion for the nappies!

When my microfibre nappies started to smell, I washed them and then rinsed them about 3 times - it can be to do with build up of soap residue. Just keep rinsing til you see no more bubbles in the machine.

Apparently modern washing machines don't use enough water to effectively rinse your washing - in order to get an environmentally friendly rating - meaning you have to do extra rinses after the cycle Hmm

There was something on the Baba Me Facebook page a while ago about Ecover not being great for washing nappies.
Do you do a cold rinse first?
It could be that the ammonia smell is getting set in with the wash, rinsing first is a good idea.
Agree about the build up of soap residue as well so rinse, rinse, rinse.
