I want to pass our nappies on to my DB and his wife for their new baby, but after two years of use in a really hard-water area they're really quite scratchy. I don't know that that will be a problem for the baby, but I think I'd find it off-putting as a first-time parent. Any ideas? I've tried a hot wash with vinegar, but it's not helped very much.

Thanks a lot in advance. :)

The only way is to tumble dry them, and they won't come up anything like new, just softer and less crunchy.

As you say, their current state is no problem at all for the baby - they are very absorbent, more so than when brand new.

Hope that helps.

Yes, that does help, thanks. No tumble drier here, but DB has one at least.

Are you anything to do with this MrCurly? Grin

Frost works wonders, not as good a tumble drying, but very good.

Should I just leave them outside overnight then, fibernachi? (Thanks too, I knew I could rely on MN.)

Yup,hang em up over night, or 24 hours if oyu can.

Okay, excellent. Glad they chose to have their baby at the right time of year!

Goodness knows what the neighbours will think though, DS is six. I might have to put a sheet over them. Thanks again!

Soda crystals are a brilliant water softener ? they are cheap and they shift stains too.

fanofpeamum · 10/12/2010 18:43

Thanks, swampster. I don't know if I can get soda crystals where I am, but I have some bicarb so I'm going to give that a go and then hang them out for the frost treatment too. Soften, nappies, please!

Oh, BTW, I was assuming you stripped them before you put them away. A build up of detergent can make them crispy. If you didn't strip, you do it by putting a drop of washing up liquid on each nappy and washing, washing, washing until there are no bubbles left.

fanofpeamum · 10/12/2010 19:56

Okay, these nappies are really going to get it: washing-up liquid, then bicarb, then frost. It's so long ago that I put them away fibernachi that I cant remember what I did!
