wet vest edges with Bumgenius

that's the problem, really: BG last him for ages - 9 hour s overnight without him being upset even when they're soaked BUT 4 times out of 5 the edges of his vest are soaked with pee. Are the nappies/vests the wrong size or do they just not suit him (long thin baby, 17 pounds at 5.5 months). Thanks in advance for any advice!

It's called wicking, whats happening is that the microfibre insert kind of becomes like a sponge when it gets really really wet. When it gets like this, the weight of your baby causes the insert to sort of leak a little bit onto the vest. I've had it with my DS, all you need to do is to boost the nappy with another insert such as a bamboo or a hemp one. This is what I did and it worked for us.

If it doesn't work, it could be that there is a hole in the PUL lining. Try putting your nappies in the tumble dryer on a low heat for ten to twenty minutes and it should seal any of the holes.

BG V3 and 4 were the same on my DD, in the end i got rid of them as other nappies don't wick on her. She is also long and thin!

peachybums · 09/12/2010 10:21

Ihad no problems with DD1 she was in bumgenius till she was 3 years old.

DD2 different story lol, i had the same with the wicking onto the vests. She was ok through the day but every morning her vest was damp. I tried boosting and everything but it didnt work, in the end i gave up and got her some night nappies and just use bumgenius through the day.

yes I'm having the same issue - i gave up on them with DS2 cos of this. Just dug them out for DS3 and started using them but again the same. Also they really stink of wee - what can i do about that? I wash them on a 60 wash without any powder/liquid.

Inspirachion · 13/12/2010 15:13

I have same problem with bg 3. Also a long slim baby.

I though it was because the vest edges sit on the nappy edge.

Find either making sure no clothes tight to edge of nappy or changing more often prevents this.

Elena67 · 13/12/2010 17:33

whoodoo we had a phase of stinky nappies too - stripped them (rinse with capful of white vinegar then wash with a slosh of washing up liquid then rinse repeatedly til water's not foamy) and cut down on the washing powder - 1/3rd of recommended amount and it's MUCH better. Still stinks a bit (like burnt rubber!) when he's teething though...
The wicking is still a bit of a problem, tho improved with the double stuffing (one normal and one bamboo liner) also only fastening the vest on the middle popper, which gives hime a bit of a wedgy but the nappy is thick enough for this not to be a real problem.

Elena67-the rinsing in the vinegar-just the middle stuffing or the outer part too?

Elena67 · 14/12/2010 14:06

sorry - just the padding as I think the vinegar rots the elastic or the plasticky outer (or something!)

Use a vest extender, especially if you have a long thin baby. That way, the vest edges don't sit next to or pull on the edges of the Bumgenius.

They are 3 for a couple of pounds from most nappy companies - you only need a few as obviously they don't get 'dirty'.

goodmanners · 15/12/2010 18:34

i had this alot with all my nappies so we moved into big boys/ girls vests asap, job done.

NineLadiesDancingThroughLife · 15/12/2010 18:37

I had this with DD, all through the day. Every hour or so I could feel the wicking start, if I left her for another 30mins she would be soaked through her clothes.

I've stopped using them now because they really weren't lasting long enough. It's a real shame.

I might try again though. I refuse to be beaten for good Grin

megonthemoon · 18/12/2010 16:18

Just came on to post about this - as ever someone has beaten me to it!

DD is 11 weeks old. Been using BG on and off but keep getting this problem. Never had it with DS in 2.4 years in them but barely use them with DD at the moment because I hate that I have to change her and her clothes every 1.5 hours at most but don't want to abandon them as I loved them with DS.

I'll try vest extenders and see how that helps. I'm not sure stuffing with extra boosters will help as I can't imagine what size the nappies will be by the time she is 6 months old if she's already going through them so quickly at 11 weeks!

Elena67 · 06/03/2011 09:04

just to say vest extenders have pretty much done the trick - hurrah and thanks. They do make him look a bit like Bo Derek in 10 tho, due to high leg holes!

I have never found that BG are absorbant enough for either of my 2 for night time use.
For daytime use I find that Little lamb bamboo boosters fit in nicely, microfibre on top as it is quicker to absorb then bamboo underneath works and still keeps the nappy quite slim megonthemoon

Help- Any one using or have used bum genuis birth to potty nappies and had problems?
Once my twins got to about 12 months, the nappies would not last them through the night, and in fact during the day, after an hour and a half they would be soaked during the day, and would need a complete change. I have stuck strictly to the washing guidelines since I have had them. I went back to the retailer that I bought them from, and after 6 months of negotiations, and having one nappy sent back to bum genuis, they are stating the problem is 'delamination' and it has been caused by either washing above 60 degrees, or using nappy soak. neither of which I have done. I feel quite angered that I invested a lot of momney into these nappies, have stuck exactly to the washing guidelines, but now the nappies are basically useless, I cannot get a refund or exchange, and I am being blamed for the fault. Is there any one else out there with similar complaints?
Regards

Cumbrianlass2 · 22/03/2011 17:00

Hi rippet, am suprised at the response from the retailer. I would have thought it was more that you needed to boost them. Have you tried adding a hemp booster for daytime use? As for nights, am afraid that unless you have very light wetters, I find pockets are just not absorbant enough.

Pingpong · 22/03/2011 23:21

Hi rippet - I've replied on your other thread but I agree with cumbrianlass it sounds to me like more boosting is required and a different nappy for night time.

cairnterrier · 27/03/2011 16:17

We also had this problem then when we moved house and hence washing machines, it suddenly went away, coinciding w DS's nappy rash clearing up. I suspect that our previous washing machines wasn't rinsing the detergent out.

I found a combination of bigger size vests to avoid pulling over the nappy area, strip washing the nappies and putting on an extra rinse cycle after every wash has sorted things out.
