Best reusable nappy? Your recommendations please

I'm thinking of using reusable nappies for numero uno - still cooking though officially done yesterday Grin - and have been doing some research into what good brands / models of reusable nappies are out there.

Instead of feeling informed I feel completely overwhelmed by the amount on offer (which I should be thankful for!) and don't know what brand to go for, much less the type (all in ones, with a separate liner, etc??) Confused.

I'm sure there's no right / wrong answer and that it all depends on personal preference but I'd really like to try 3/4 different brands to help make my mind up, but probably stick to one type of nappy for a good comparison.

Could you tell me your favourite brand of nappy and your favourite type? Also, do you have a favourite online supplier?

Any advice, pearls of wisdom gratefully received...it would really help and also take my mind off due date coming and rolling on Xmas Smile

This thread is old so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for sustainable nappies, we’ve recently updated our best reusable nappies page with plenty of great options tried and tested by Mumsnet parents. We hope you find it useful.

It depends on your needs really. Check out the babykind website, they have local agents who can talk through what would suit you best.

I would advise against getting any kind of prefold nappy (eg: bambino mio, mothercare smartnappies) as most people I know who've tried them asolutely hated them and gave up o cloth.

I found that pocket nappies just didn't work on DS, he leaked through them costantly. Twoparters and all in two style nappies suited him really well. Two part fitted nappies will suit most babies (in terms of cotainment)

Cogratulations and good luck!

Favourite type: two-part (fitted nappy + waterproof wrap) - best for containment, especially before weaning :)
Favourite brand: Tots Bots - good quality, never had a problem with them (using FlexiTots and EasyFit) and the price is not outrageous
Good for info supplier: babykind.co.uk

Other notes:
Hard water? : bamboo seems to be the only fabric that actually has a chance of staying soft
Liners? (useful after weaning) : Flushable are easiest. Don't buy the paper ones (too rough), spunlace are actually soft (Tots Bots)
Night nappies? : Wee Notions Night Notions (pricey, but very good - again bamboo, +cuddlesoft)

Favourite nappy definitely Bumgenius, really slim, very absorbent, dry super fast, nice colours. However, they weren't a good fit on dd until she was about 3 months (only 6lb7oz at birth). If you fancy trying these, some websites are still selling off the previous version 3 at a discount, which was recently replaced by the v4, but isn't much different.

I bought a birth to potty set of Lollipop Softees before she was born which in hindsight was a mistake, not because of performance, as they're very reliable, but just because they are relatively bulky as cloth goes. I hadn't considered this aspect.

For night time I love Tots Bots Bamboozle stretchie, very absorbent, although slower to dry.

It's personal choice, but I prefer fleece liners to paper as they keep the bottom dryer.

With regard to suppliers, I've been really impressed by fillyourpants.co.uk. Efficient service, you can earn points to deduct off future orders, and they have an advice service where you can submit a query, always had a reply in a few days.

In general I would suggest trying some different types once your baby is born to decide what you like before committing to a full set.

I do understand the temptation to stock up from the start so you feel "sorted" when trying cloth, but for me its like someone buying two years worth of just one kind of disposable nappy before having the baby - which wouldn't work because different types suit different babies and even the same baby doesn't always suit the same type they used as a newborn right through to potty training.

So don't buy too many because it would be like buying two years worth of huggies just because they work at the moment for most people you know who use disposables at the moment.

My favourites for nursery / babysitters are coolababy/sweetbaby/ebay pockets with microfibre

I also LOVE bambooty.

At home my favourites at the minuite (but my LO is nearly 2!) are little lambs lined with a big square of fleece and with fleece longies on top.

At night I have to use fully lined if he's in cloth, so that's weenotions at the mo

If I were to do it again I think I'd go for mostly lined fitteds

cheeks and cherries are very helpful
bespoke babyroom have lovely accessories
jabulababy
babybots
find them all on facebook for best offers

pearls of wisdom: birth to potty rarely fit brand newborns IMO, but the smallest I've seen are fuzzybunz - that's the only BTP pocket I have that I think might fit a newborn.
Onelifes suck! (IMO, but I cannot GIVE them away never mind sell em so I don't think I'm alone in thinking that)

Hi,

I've got DS in bumgenius and easyfits plus a few rumparooz, we seem to get on with these nappies very well and the easy fits come in such funky prints as do the rumparooz. I also have some fitteds as well, motherease and little lambs are a combination that are bomb proof (believe you me, DS has tried). Really the only nappies I've actually really hated were fuzzi bunz, itti bittis and cushie tushies. But from what I've seen itti bittis and cushies are like marmite, you either love them or you hate them. I'm mostly keen on pocket nappies as I can stuff them with an extra insert or two as I need to. For inserts (don't think about this just yet) I use a mixture of bamboo and hemp.

Don't get a birth to potty pack, just buy one of each nappy that you like and try them on your LO. I bought quite a few different brands and tried them on DS and through a bit of trial and error managed to get sorted.

My best online retailers are:

Cloth Nappy Tree (lots of second hand bargins to be had)

Fillyourpants

Babipur

Babykind

Some of these have 10% off offers on at the moment as well.

Pearls of wisdom: Cloth is seriously addictive, I just can't seem to help myself from buying funky prints to put on my little DS.

Congratulations on your LO!!! Xmas Grin

Thanks for all your advice Smile.

Seems like 'pocket' nappies is favourite so yesterday I took the plunge and ordered some of those to try (bumgenius, rumparoo, and wonderoo) alongside a tots bots bamboozle for nights.

The tots bots has already arrived in the post today (from fillyourpants) Xmas Grin - if only baby would come to try them!

Like Bumgenius, Issy Bear (could see they'd be bulky on newborns) and Wee Notions. Getting into Tots Bots Easyfits.

Aplix is good when you have a small baby but poppers come into their own when they learn how to take aplix off - from about 8 months on.

LeggyBlondeNE · 17/12/2010 11:00

I'm loving FLIPs with Stay-dry insert. They've not leaked yet as the inserts make anice pad against the bottom, and the combination of rectangular insert and wipe-able outer means my nappy pail isn't full up in a blink.

At night I've just stuck in an extra bamboo booster fom babipur (a really friendly online supplier).

That said, T was 6 weeks before I put her in reusables as before that she was a bit skinny.

I also like Pop-Ins although not as much.

I didn't like bambino mio - prefold far too bulky for wrap.

goodmanners · 17/12/2010 12:38

fave for us are greenkids, bumgenius, fuzzi bunz though stil prefer the perfect fit ones. Online shops: nappyzone ( gives a mumsnet discount) or stratford nappies.

legallyblond · 21/12/2010 14:59

I also LOVE bumgenius flips with the stay dry insert. All the other popular nappies (we tried bumgenius, totsbots easyfits and pop-ins) seemed to leak and wick. Flips have proven to be utterly bombproof, even for breast fed poos! DD has been in them since 7 weeks.

Best supplier is fill your pants - I go to them every time! FANTASTIC service.
