I took the bloody dummy away!

ds is 6 months and rather dummy-dependent so today I thought I'd try to see if he could nap without it. I've never liked it, but he's been hooked since a hospital stay at 6 weeks. 3 minutes of snuffles then... silence! I popped my head over the cot to see and he had his thumb in his mouth sleeping soundly. Oh well. He has won. Have others found this happens, that sucky babies will suck whatever.

Yup and unfortunately thumb sucking can be a much harder habit to break. My 40 yo friend still does it occasionally!

one way babies can self comfort is to suck...I am very Xmas Envy...you have managed to dump the dummy....I would say you have won!!! we are in a similar situation but I have been too chicken to take her dummy away, maybe I will try it, at least you dont have to scrabble round in the cot in the dark to find your babies thumb!!!

I hoped to bin the dummy and avoid thumb sucking, I can't bin his fingers! Think I might give it back for a while...once he's gone he doesn't suck anyway, no night waking.

DS1 was not interested in a dummy at all but as soon as I stopped BF he found his thumb and at 4.7 shows no sign of breaking the habit.

DS2 was however actively encouraged to have a dummy! DH used it all the time and needed training that it was only for bed/nap time and since about 18 months it has not come outside of the bedroom. DS2 is now 2.7 and we had planned on giving the dummy to Santa for the baby reindeer but have wimped out! We might get brave and try the Easter Bunny...

If DS2 falls asleep out in his pushchair he doesn't have a dummy or suck his thumb so for him I think it is a habit rather than anything else!

Would recommend keeping the dummy if you can as it can be limited! DS1 constantly has his thumb in his mouth and often doesn't realise he is doing it - even walking down the road he will make sure he stands on one side of me so that he can hold my hand and suck his thumb!
