2 week old with blocked nose

My 2 week old DD has developed a blocked nose. She sounds awful and it's especially hard feeding her as she splutters and gets herself worked up, and getting through the night is tough as she sounds like she's choking in her sleep.

Husband tried to suck out the mucus with his mouth this morning (now that's true love!) to no avail, don't think he was sucking hard enough but he was afraid of damaging her as she's so teeny.

Any advice? Does this pass with time, as I've read newborns are quite mucussy by nature. Might have something to do with the central heating being on 24/7. I've elevated the mattress in her Moses basket tonight which seems to be making a slight difference.

Get some saline drops they work really well for clearing little noses, you could also turn the shower on and take her into the steamy air for a bit.

Cheers Mallows, just been reading about saline drops and they do sound good. Also putting a bowl of water next to the radiator at night is meant to be good.

Prop the head end of her bed up with a couple of books, this will help drain and reduce the sniffles. You can get little booger suckers from the chemist/supermarket if you don't want to suck the bogeys out yourself - although obviously well done to your husband! Grin

Try rubbing Snufflebabe on chest - like Vicks.

Could also be a sign of silent reflux. Does she fuss when feeding? Could try feeding her in a more upright position and keep her upright for about half an hour after feeding.

I found saline followed by using a device like a pipette designed for baby snot sucking worked very well. You can buy them at Boots. www.boots.com/en/NUK-Nasal-Decongester_25636/
