in the park? Is there really a risk of them doing themselves a serious injury?

Mine don't in the garden or when riding in the park on grass. They are too young to ride on the road. I think that's when you need a helmet. Perhaps it is a good habit to get into though, I don't know but I don't feel it necessary on grass.

RTKangaMummy · 25/09/2005 18:28

DEFFO yes all the time

The mindees do as well even in the front garden/yard on tricyles

My cousin had brain damage from going into a tree as a child

roisin · 25/09/2005 18:32

Always if they are on bikes, skateboards, or scooters no matter where they are.

My boys function best with absolute rules, which is why we rarely compromise on things like this.

yes, always, that way they get in the habit of wearing one whenever and wherever they ride, (and I get in the habit of making the wear one as well!)

RTKangaMummy · 25/09/2005 18:35

exactly rosin same here

so everybody expects to wear the helmets

macwoozy · 25/09/2005 18:40

Bikes I would, but not even considered it for scooters.

Eve · 25/09/2005 18:49

Definitely, for bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc.

Heard of a child that was killed a few years ago as they hit their hit on edge of a kerb falling of a bike.

Doesn't take a big fall, just an awkward one to do serious damage.

anniebear · 25/09/2005 18:58

yes, (well my ltitle girl on her trike and straped in with me pushing doesnt)but my other little girl has done as soon as she got a proper bike

Just thought it was good to get her used to the idea...bike equals helmet

bensmum3 · 25/09/2005 20:12

All 3 of mine wear helmets on anything wheeled, including ds2 on his push along trike, I agree its a good habit to get into wherever you are, even on grass you occasionally get rocks or stones.

KBear · 25/09/2005 20:16

Hmm, perhaps I should re-think my relaxed stance on this one.

Hulababy · 25/09/2005 20:32

DD got a bike in April for her 3rd birthday. Whenever she goes outside on her bike, regardless of grass or road, she wears a helmet. I want her to get used to wearing a helmet. DD also wears her helmet when on her roller skates.

She's now got a scooter and I think she will have to wear a helmet for that when outside of the garden too.

A helmet is life saving, and IMO should be a legal requirement at the very least for EVERYONE cycling on a road.

Hulababy · 25/09/2005 20:33

I know it would be a frealk accident, but a child could easily fall off on grass and hit their head against a stone, a park bench, edge of pathway, etc. These things DO happen sadly.

DS's don't in the garden, (and admittedly not at the park yet). But I think we'll soon be trying the bike without stabilisers, and DS1 knows that he'll have to wear a helmet at all times from then onwards.

Gobbledigook · 25/09/2005 20:37

Ditto QoQ.

Is that norty? I s'pose I should get them in the habit really.

QueenOfQuotes · 25/09/2005 20:38

I've already told DS1 that he'll be having a helmet, and he's really excited about it - thankfully he's also one of those children that easily accepts 'changes' - and therefore - 'big boy bike' (ie 2 wheels in stead of 4) = helmet.

Yes always. My cousin fell off her bike and ended up with a serious head injury. Have to admit I don't wear one myself when just cycling with the kids, but when cycling to work I do. Always.

Yes mine do - even on grass. They get the habit to alwways put a helmet one.

milward · 25/09/2005 20:40

ahhh - sorry for the spelling!

Fennel · 25/09/2005 20:41

mums don't need helmets, our heads are harder and we don't keep falling off. That's what I tell my dds anyway.
they wear them generally, especially since learning to go on 2 wheels (not stabilisers). but am rather influenced by Dutch cycling where even small children rarely wear helmets - cycling is much more "normal" in places like that, far less lycra and hard gear for what should be an everyday thing.l
