Terry Squares

Thinking of getting terry squares for a new born (perhaps a few days afterwards), will use them with the nippa things and a wrap.
Could you tell me:
-Are they leaky?
-PUL or fleece wraps?

I'll probably have some shaped nappies as well for when out/tired, is my plan a bad idea?

Terries are fab, far better than disposables on a newborn. Reason is, most newborns are scrawny when born, and a disposable can be difficult to do up tight enough to stop the leaks round the legs onto clothing especially.

Whereas a terry square you fold to suit your baby - and if it leaks then the wrap over the top stops it getting on your baby's clothes and everywhere.

For a newborn, I'd go for PUL - lots less bulky than fleece, also as you'll change NB more frequently, there's not the benefit of breathability required as your baby will psend a fair amount of time nappy off being changed!

My favourites for newborn are So Simple Snap as they have no elastic, and even if a bit roomy you can hoick them up under the armpits if needs be with no marks being left. Also the Motherease are great, very reliable and Nature Babies lots of fab prints.

Personally I'd use muslins for a newborn rather than terry squares - they are a lot less bulky and easier to fold IME. I'd put it with a PUL wrap, either a Motherease Rikki or a Thirsties Duo wrap (my new fave!).

Thank you! will have a look at all your recommendations. I had read in several posts that perhaps for the meconium it was better to have disposables, do you guys don't agree?

I used disposables for the first 2 or 3 days til the meconium cleared then went on to muslins x

knittakid · 04/12/2010 10:07

thank you ziggyf, when you use the muslins, do you fold together more than one?
so sorry I'm so ignorant about all this.

Also, can you use muslins and terries inside the cover of one of those two-part nappies like the bumgenious flip?

OP posts:
ziggyf · 04/12/2010 14:24

I just used one at a time but I only used them in the early days when DS was small and didn't wee much or go long between nappy changes. You may need more than one if you are still using muslins when baby is a bit bigger and does bigger wees! I think the fold I did was called a kite fold? It was the one my Mum used to use on us when we were in terries years ago!

DrSeuss · 04/12/2010 14:46

Muslins with paper liners to start, then terry squares with PUL liners. See thenappylady.co.uk for details. She has a page of folds for different ages and genders. Personally, I like the poo catcher for newborns especially if BF. You can use muslins folded up as boosters if necessary for heavy wetters.

ragged · 04/12/2010 14:48

IME, For newborns a single muslin cloth will do to start, eventually you'll need to double them or use boosters and then move onto true terries and something like the Gaynor fold.

The origami fold is best for newborns ime, you need to look for it on UTube. Kite fold pants, imvho.

Getting fold right is very important for preventing leaks, btw.

I had shaped nappies for out and about, too.

DrSeuss · 04/12/2010 14:54

Shaped nappies very useful for out and and about. To fold a terry you need something to rest it on and there rarely is anything in a changing area.

knittakid · 04/12/2010 17:08

thank you for nappy lady recommendations, and the reminder of folds being important as well as the lack of space in chaging rooms, how true.
Still looking at several things. drSeuss, did you mean PUL wraps? which ones are your favourites?

OP posts:
DrSeuss · 04/12/2010 17:15

Wraps, not liners! Durr! Rikki wraps by Motherease or Nature Baby ones. Paper liners are good. Tots Bots one piece nappies are good but hard to dry. Fluffles are nearly dry when you take them out of the machine. There's also something called bamboozles althought I've never used them. Cotton bottoms leaked every time and so I would steer clear. Welcome to the wonderful world of theReal Nappy. People will think you're strange but you will know you're the sane one!

knittakid · 04/12/2010 18:36

I understood, don't worry. Yes it is a crazy world, and I find scary to be soooo excited about nappies!

OP posts:
DrSeuss · 04/12/2010 19:21

But nappies are great. Arm yourself with some interesting facts to stop nay sayers in their tracks- eg since disposables last 500yrs+ in landfill, this would mean that, had Henry 8th worn them, they would still be out there somewhere! Also, makes it easier to toilet train as they can feel the wetness. You will be told that studies show environmental impact higher with cloth. That study included use of tumble drier so air drying will tip the balance back. If you go for unbleached cotton they can't use the bleach argument on you and if you use tea tree oil or white vinegar as a soak, they can't get you on chemicals either.

OmicronPersei8 · 04/12/2010 19:41

I'd recommend the Jo fold for newborns - one my friends lent me some smaller terry squares which worked well, but it's great for making a terry pretty compact. Or you can do it with a muslin, of course. The origami fold is good too.

WastingAway · 05/12/2010 10:45

Muslins are brilliant for newborns, they dry very quickly for a start.

From what I now know, I would use muslins for first 3 months, folded terries for another few months then shaped nappies that you can stuff with the muslins/terries like Eco Bumbles.
All with Motherease wraps.
I like the wool wraps, but they are a pain to wash.

knittakid · 05/12/2010 10:51

Thank you wasting, that sounds like a good plan.
Pitty the Motherease wraps are sooo dull! are they really the best?
Are the wool wraps a pain to wash because of the speciall soap? or do you have to do it by hand?

OP posts:
DrSeuss · 05/12/2010 10:54

They're not all totally dull, there are some with patterns. Go for Nature Baby then, if you want pretty ones.
Chech the Nappy Laddy for info on wraps.

knittakid · 05/12/2010 11:03

How shallow of me dr seuss...

OP posts:
WastingAway · 05/12/2010 11:13

You can't see them anyway, but Motherease do have patterns.

Ye, handwash with special soap, soak in lanolin to water proof and then take a while to dry. And if LO immediately gets poo on it, start all over again!

peachybums · 09/12/2010 10:29

I used muslins for the first 2 weeks then went onto totsbots shaped nappies. Tried terries and now they are my new faves!!!

As for wraps, newborns dont move a lot so try to avoid fleece at first as the wee will just soak through, pul are better. I used nature babies and never had a leak. Little lambs are my faves from 5 mths, if you check out babybots they have limited edition coloured ones.

knittamerrykid · 10/12/2010 19:14

thanks!

OmicronPersei8 · 13/12/2010 11:26

If you want some very pretty wraps, the imsy vimsy ones have a lovely cotton feel and nice patterns. Bit pricey though (or maybe they all are, it's lost in the mists of sleeplessness time for me) Actually, do you want some? I have a few - pm me if you're interested.

GMajor7SwansASwimming · 13/12/2010 11:48

Absolutely Wasting Away Grin

I have a stack of terry squares, 15 Eco Bumbles and 4 Motherease Rikki Wraps and I'm still amazed at how effective they are - no leaks whatsoever!! I stuff the Bumbles with a folded terry - cheap and cheerful.

The Motherease wraps aren't quite as snazzy as some other brands, but they work brilliantly.

And yes, people will think you're nuts!

knittamerrykid · 14/12/2010 10:43

Thank you GMajor, that sounds more or less like the set up I'm looking for!
