I find we have too much stuff in ds's room so I don't think he enjoys it as much as he could if we got rid of stuff.
Ii wawnt to be inspired to help him make it his space somehow,

I agree with homeboys: let him choose theme colours, from a short list that you find acceptable.
Heaps of storage - we use plastic drawer units in the bottom of the wardrobe so they can pull out the drawer of the thing that they want to play with without hauling out the entire contents of the wardrobe.
We also got some of the over the door hooks (no drilling or screwing in required) and in my daughter's room we hang simple drawstring bags in colours which match her room and they are used for storage too, aswell as continuing the theme colours of her room.
Be wary of beanbags IMO. My parents gave both my dc's them and they take up a lot of space and are rarely used, especially since mine have no tvs/computers/consoles in their bedrooms. Our bedrooms are small and there just isn't the space for them.
We don't have room for them (sloping ceilings) but large magnetic "pin" boards seem a good idea from that age upwards, for art work, photos, posters etc. They would be easy to update as they grow, without wrecking the walls. It would also personalise the room.
If you go for themed bedlinen, curtains, etc remember not to spend too much on it as they outgrow the theme quick. We decorated my son's room in Ben 10 stuff last year and this year he is now more into Star Wars and Mario! We ended up getting stripy curtains and bed linen from Next which matched the bright (Ben 10 green) walls, but which will not seem babyish or outdated in a year or two. Themed colours seem to last better.
Good Luck!
