Hi all, been using cellular blankets and flannellete sheets up to now but decided to try baby sleeping bags with my daughter! What tog do I need in this weather and how many would you recommend buying? Also I was thinking of getting matalan and asda ones anyone had these as I can't afford the original grobags?

Providing she is at or above the recommended weight to use them, then go for it

My DD has a 2.5 tog grobag which I think is the highest you can get

Her room is on the chilly side though

Nothing wrong with Asda or Matalan ones - TKMaxx often have them on sale too

rubyslippers · 15/11/2010 21:25

Get at least 2 - so if one is in the wash there is no hassle waiting for it to to dry etc

sazlocks · 15/11/2010 21:26

If you don't mind second hand you can get great bargains on gro bags on ebay. My 9 month old has 3 2.5 tog ones.

Anyone know if you can get a sleeping bag for babies over 18mo?

Sorry for thread hijack :)

pantaloons · 15/11/2010 21:32

It might just be my fidgety children, but I found they managed to pop the poppers on the type with shoulder straps. So it might be worth getting the zip front type rather than those that zip round the edge.

pantaloons · 15/11/2010 21:33

Also debka, my 3 have been in them until 3 ish. They were the grobag ones.

debka · 15/11/2010 21:35

thanks, will have a look around :)

DirtyMartini · 15/11/2010 21:39

I would strongly advise anyone to buy second hand grobag brand (on ebay) over new cheapo brands. As an extensive user of bags, I have found the cheap ones wear far less well -- and you will be washing them a lot.

If you have a tumble drier and use it a lot, you can get away with having just 2 bags at a time, and maybe get a third one if you can stretch to it. If you have no drier I would definitely get three bags, just in case of sickness bugs or something, because they take a wee while to air dry.

I have no idea how I'd keep my DS warm without baby sleeping bags!
I second the advice re: zip up ones rather than popper ones, my DS breaks out of poppers! I love Grobag ones but they are expensive, TK Maxx have them occasionally (but they also have other brands that are pretty nice). I also recommend the Ikea ones, I bought a lovely fleecy one recently for £9.99. I have three 2.5 tog bags for use now. we don't have a tumble dryer though so need at least two spare just in case.

LoopyLoops · 15/11/2010 21:40

I recommend the Matalan ones. £8, wash really well.

jellybeans · 15/11/2010 21:41

I used the matalan, grobag and mothercare ones, all were great. Supermarket ones are fine. I always got 2.5 tog unless it was summer where i got 1.5 tog. They are fantastic! I think 2.5 is the best one to get, you can just modify what they have underneath if the room changes.

DirtyMartini · 15/11/2010 21:41

TK Maxx sometimes has grobag brand, too -- not always the right tog for the season though.

Bear in mind when hunting for a bargain that nothing matters less than whether a bag was designed for a boy or a girl -- cosiness is the goal, pink flowers/blue boats notwithstanding :) If you keep checking regularly there are some good bargains about.

TragicallyHipPomBear · 15/11/2010 21:42

You'll need tog 2.5 for winter and add pj's/vest tops etc accordingly.
You will generally get a thermometer with the gro bag telling you what they need to wear depending on the temperature of the room.
I've had ones from TKMaxx, Ikea, Primark and Amazon, the best are ones that zip up the front instead of pop buttons on the top as they seem to open when DS moves around.

debka DS is in an 18 - 36 month one at the mo which I got from Amazon

HTH

xpost :)

I'm a bag snob, I guess Blush. Well, kind of. If you can be a snob and still buy ancient faded ones over t'Internet. I've just had a fair few own-brand ones come to bits over the years.

LoopyLoops · 15/11/2010 21:48

Ah, I was given a Primark one, which didn't say on its label its TOG value. It was FAR too thick and quite uncomfortable for DD.

DaniJade1990 · 15/11/2010 21:53

Thank you everyone think I'm going to go with the matalan ones and buy 3 just in case!

Matalan (£8) and Adsa (£10) ones are great, 2.5 tog are what we are using just now. When it gets colder I put a wool cardigan on too.
Grobag ones are good and ds is using the pink fairy one from dd, as I wasn't spending the money on getting a blue one!
We have 4 to alternate, would manage with 2 though.

TragicallyHipPomBear · 15/11/2010 21:55

The primark one I have isn't thick, it's similar to the Ikea one and has the tog number on the label. It has been great really.

spiderlight · 15/11/2010 21:58

We had two lovely cosy ones from Tesco, which were much softer and warmer than the 'official' Grobag ones, and another fab one from Slumbersac. Just to be awkward, my DS HATED one that we were given that zipped up the front, and it seemed to end up with the zip right under his chin.

DaniJade1990 · 16/11/2010 13:52

Thanks everyone got two lovely ones from asda today and one from matalan! What does everyone dress their babies in in this weather? I can't have the heating on overnight so it gets quite chilly in my house early hours.

DD is in PJs (usually babygro) and sleeping bag. Her room is about 20degrees though, 18 or so and I'd put a vest on her too.

katiepotatie · 17/11/2010 23:14

DS is wearing vest, baby grow, wool cardi and grobag. Their room is usually between 16 & 19 degrees
