Should I buy a cot bed for a newborn?

I am wondering is a cot bed too big for a newborn? Am afraid the baby will feel 'lost' in such a big space especially as they have to sleep 'head to toe'. A mosses basket looks too flimsey to put a new born in.

I would prefer a cot bed as they seem to sturdier than cribs or cots. And I would hope it would be cheaper in the long run.

Any advice as I haven't a clue?????

Thanks

You can get things to put across the cot to make it less long, so more suited to a baby. We were lent a moses basket initially, and it really wasn't worth it as it wasn't used for that long. Glad we didn't buy one. There are some places that do rental, which might be worth considering.

Some babies like to be swaddled/wrapped to keep warm & feel secure (as although the womb has some room, there isn't that much ifswim), although we found DD hated either approach.

Thanks.

My baby isn't actually born yet so am thinking ahead. Do the things you put across the cot bed actually work?

Cot dividers work absolutely fine.

IMO moses baskets are actually far sturdier than they look - especially if you get a stand to put them in.

We were also lent a moses basket which we used for about the first 10 weeks - much easier to fit in next to the bed than a cotbed.

DD grew out of it - kept pushing herself up the moses basket and ending up with her head touching the top end.

We then moved her straight into the cotbed with no divider. Just made sure she was near the bottom and the blanket/ sheet was well tucked over her. And yes, she did look teeny in there but soon started to grow into it.

After being in a swinging crib my boys went straight to a cotbed. They were in GroBag so does not matter where they lie/ move around. Bigger than a cot, then can be dismantled into a bed when big enough so lasts a long time.

I got a cot bed for my DS (now 5) and he spent the first few wks in his moses basket.

I then transfered the moses basket into the cot bed iyswim while he got used to it.

We have had our monies worth from it as DD (2.9) is now in it and it should last her till she is about 5 (as a bed not cot obviously Grin)

DS is still in cot bed (without the bars) at 5. So it's worth the extra money I'd say. I also put the moses basket in the cot bed at one point. The cot bed also works if one side is off, and we did this for a while and stuck the open side of the cot bed to our bed. Does that make sense? It's because I was BF him at night and I enjoyed having him next to me at night time.

We used a smaller crib for the first few months, then moved DD into the cotbed. We're delighted with ours.

we had cotbed from start, and she was only 5lb slept crossways to start then had gro-bag/snoozie I love it so does she.
would definitely buy again, just make sure you can still move in your room though, you dont want to have to crawl into your own bed awkwardly for months, she had had own room since 3 months as DP snoring was waking her, it wakes me but that does not count!!!

One thing against a cot bed is that they generally don't have different height settings/drop side. I did find it really useful to have the cot on its top setting with the side dropped when trying to lower a baby in without waking him/her (yes, i did sometimes feed/cuddle to sleep Shock and not put them down awake!!!).

We had a cotbed from mamas and papas that had 3 diff height levels.I originally was going to use a moses basket first then cotbed but as had emergency c section ended up putting moses basket downstairs for daytime sleeps and dd slept in cotbed at night straight away from 3 days old wen came home, i didnt use a divider and no problems.I did the same with dd2, both were in cotbed at end of our bed for 7mths.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 14/11/2010 23:07

we got one for each of our boys, they are both still in them, ds1 is nearly six! They were fine in them as babies, didnt really get used at first as they were in the moses basket and I borrowed a little crib for our room till they went into their own room at six months or so.

SparklyJules · 14/11/2010 23:10

We had a mamas and papas cot bed that had 3 height levels as well. It's been brilliant - bought it for DC1 seven years ago and it's still being used (as a bed) by DC2.

Both babies slept in the carrycot of their pram (big M&P MPX carrycot with proper "sleep" mattress) until about 4 months old and then went into the cotbed.

The cotbed is the best long-term item we bought.
