fleecy sleepsuits and cold nights

DS (19 months) has been waking up a couple of times at night-(briefly but still waking) and DH (who goes to him and soothes him back to sleep) says that he's concerned that he may be cold as his face and hands are icy. The temp in the room has been about 16 (despite double glazing, heavy curtains, central heating until 10pm...it's a 120 year old house!).

He loves to snuggle up in the mornings for his milk and his little cheeks have been very cold.

Tonight I've put him in vest, fleece sleep suit and 2.5 tog gro bag. Is this overkill? Up til now it's been vest, cotton babygro and gro bag. Any other ideas? Heating on all night is NOT an option financially.

Sounds fine.

Our last place was the same and ds1 went to bed like that.

No, don't think it's overkill. We don't go for the fleecy sleepsuits (eczema issues), but sounds fine for a chilly room. You could also try tucking in with blankets (probably not at the same time, that might be overkill!).

I dont see anything wrong with that. In the depth of winter mine used to be in vest, sleepsuit, fleece sleepsuit and duvet with blanket! Its very cold in my house. My 2 and 4 year olds have gone to bed tonight in fleece PJs, vests, socks, thick duvets and if it gets much colder blankets.

The only thing I would maybe suggest is to ditch the grobag at 19m, and go for a duvet/blanket (or both) instead - then if when you go to bed and think he's a bit warm you can readjust the bedding easily.

My DC go to bed in vest, cotton sleep suit, fleecy sleep suit, and blanket/duvet - but then again it can get down to 11 degrees overnight in their rooms Shock and they are both warm in the morning apart from hands and it doesn't seem to bother them.
Thank goodness we are moving out of this godforsaken rented place to a nice shiny warm house soon!

I havent got a thermometer in our rooms, but I should get one - I would say our rooms go to about 10 at night. Heating is set until 10pm and comes on at 5am, but overnights are very cold. Last year I went to bed in PJs, dressing gown, slippers, duvet and blanket and was still cold!

Thanks for the reassurance. I guess this means that if he wakes tonight our hypothesis is wrong!

The other thing at 19m could be the grobag waking him. Both my DSs were out of them at about 16m, as they felt too restricted round their legs and would wake in the night. Once we switched to duvets they slept through again.

theidsalright · 11/11/2010 20:58

It is an idea-tonight will tell us more I guess. If he wakes I won't know if it's because he's too warm, because he wants a cuddle, or because of the sleepybag (that's what he calls it!)....sleep involves so many variables!

oh yes! and just when you think you've cracked every variable something changes!!!

Our house is very cold and DD's room gets down to single figures overnight easily - she goes to bed when it's really cold in a cotton sleepsuit with a fleece sleepsuit over the top, a 2.5 tog grobag, she has a sheepskin under her and a fleece blanket on top!
