help! my 3yo dd has stuck a piece of rice up her nose. we can see it but can't get it out. we really don't want to take her to a&e tonight as she would get very distressed and will have to take other dd (5mo) too. any suggestions? can we leave it until tomorrow? she is not in any discomfort, apparently. TIA

Do you have a minor injuries A&E near you? Better than main A&E and you'll be seen quicker. Personally I wouldn't leave it until tomorrow. Is there anyone who can come and look after 5 mth old?

We had a sultana up the nose a couple of months ago.

Have you tried the "mothers kiss"?

Close the non obstructed nostril with your finger and clamp your mouth over theirs and blow HARD.

Took a few attempts but it worked for us.

(This was recommended to us by the Aussie staff nurse at the A&E dept when we were waiting to see the doctor for the aforementioned sultanta :o)

dd stuck a bead up her nose a while back - I made her blow her nose hard until it came out! Short sharp bursts Wink

pinkyp · 10/11/2010 21:00

i'd take her to a&e too. Will she blow her nose? Maybe this might help dislodge it.Or perhaps some steam...like when you have cold they tell you to put the shower/taps on hot in the bathroom and shut the door and the steams helps them to breath easier..maybe this could help. I wouldnt leave it until 2moro personally.Perhaps a phone to nhs direct?

VFemme · 10/11/2010 21:01

Yeah organic matter shouldn't be left in there too long.

stillwhatimeanttobe · 10/11/2010 21:14

thanks all. we have just managed to dislodge the TWO pieces of rice by getting her to blow harder while covering the other nostril. so glad we don't all have to trek to a&e

My ds2 got a paperclip stuck up his nose a few months ago. I first took him to gp and both gp and i thought it was a piece of dried noodle up there. Gp advised to leave it as it would eventually soften and dislodge itself. She did say if it hadn't moved at all in 24hrs to call her and she would refer us to hospital as foreign objects cant be removed by gp apparently. Anyhow ended up in ent dept the following day and whole large paperclip was removed from ds2's nostril. Doc at hospital said it should never have been left as could have moved and lodged in his lungs. Not sure if same would apply for rice tho. Good luck. Sorry no paras on crap phone!

Egg · 10/11/2010 21:18

bugger. Slow typing on phone too. Glad all ok!

stillwhatimeanttobe · 10/11/2010 21:24

Shock a paperclip?! why oh why do they do it??

i am glad we got the rice out. i wouldn't have been happy leaving it. so relieced but had to give her a very firm talking to about foreign bodies and where they should not be placed from now on.

Glad all is ok still.

mummynoseynora · 10/11/2010 21:53

I recall having that convo too with dd! On the good side, nothing stuck since!

marriednotdead · 10/11/2010 22:17

Glad you sorted it, I'm lucky my DCs didn't put me through that.

The staff are very used to it in hospitals though, only the parents get embarrassed Smile

When DD was in having her tonsils out, we shared a ward with a 4 yo with a press stud up her nose.

The other child there was a boy who had been admitted to have grommets fitted as his hearing had become almost non existent. He returned from the operating theatre with a small tube of gravel and perfect hearing Grin

stillwhatimeanttobe · 11/11/2010 09:40

thanks she is all fine this morning, so we are assuming there are no more pieces of rice up there.

children are very strange creatures indeed Smile
