I am moving to a small hot island when my baby is 3 months. What reusables will be best?

Baby due December (a boy)
We move to a small hot island near Cuba next year, in March, when baby is 3 months old.

All there is on the island are Pampers and Huggies.

I would like to use reusables. Concerns are

a) Will need resuable washable liners as no disposable liners available

b) It will be hot and humid so that is a consideration

c) I will need a solution that works from 3 months until he is potty trained. I don't have much baggage space and even shipping stuff out there will be costly so a one size would be great.

d) How many (of each size nappy and of each kind of liner) will I need?

e) They need to be tough as they will be washed and washed - and dried in the sun so fading is an issue too.

I am pretty much a complete novice at this, so any help would be great. Especially if there is some kind of nappy trialling system you can recommend which I can take advantage of whilst I am still in the UK and he is 0-3 months. Am based in N London.

Cheers

coolababy?

they wash & dry fast enough, not too sweaty for LO. they cost £32 for 8 on Ebay including delivery though i recommend doubling up on the inners.

I use mine without any kind of liner as i found they irritated my LOs skin. they will fit up to about 18mo (or did on my kids) which is about when I PT them anyway. i found yellow pre-weaning poo went through the liners anyway, but brown poo would come off easily enough.

I used motherwease wraps to go over them for night use, and triple boosted them.

Maybe check out your local council to see if they have a real nappy scheme?

i would think 16 would be enough to go abroad with.

I'm on small hot island and was recommended bamboo as the coolest fabric (by thenappylady.co.uk ) so am all stocked up on Bambinex. Takes longer to dry than other fabrics but doesn't matter when you have constant sun to dry them in. Am doing the two part ones as they're supposedly the most leak proof. Numberwise, I've got 20. Fading isn't an issue with two parters I don't think as it's the inside part that is washed the most and the waterproof outer not so much.

Will he be your first? You might find you want to go down the disposable route anyway, so don't invest in a whole load of stuff to last until he's potty trained until you are sure you want to go that route. I guess you're going to Caymans?

Miffster · 09/11/2010 20:05

He is my first, yes, I will be using disposables when he is a newborn but would really like to use reusables afterwards, especially as all waste on the island just gets dumped. Washing and drying the same dozen or so nappies in sunshine over a year and a half seems much more environmentally friendly than dumping all that plastic...plus, we might have another baby out there and reuse.

Yes, it's GC where we'll be going. Expensive to ship stuff through and have to pay import duty. hence why I'm trying to trial stuff now and find something that will work from 3 months - potty trained.

incidentally i do use reusable nappies, but am not up on the most modern ones as still using the ones i had for ds1!!!
my faves are motherease one size with airflow wraps.

Miffster · 09/11/2010 20:11

@ yesterday - we're Brits, DH has a specialised legal financial services job there for 2 years, I am on mat leave and going with him, will be SAHM for a year or two. Am not really an expert in moving abroad, last time I did so I was a lot younger and single! Good luck with following your dream!

ahh ok, so did he apply for a job over there or is he just relocating with his current job? i'm finding it really hard to get info on visas and likelihood of jobs etc!

roundthehouses · 09/11/2010 20:14

I live in southern spain and used sized nappies (bimbles) when ds was very small but I used bumgenius through a typically hot summer and found them fab. Are BTP, pocket, lovely fit, easy to boost. Will be using them on my second too. highly recommend.

HATED bamboo nappies, can´t remember which ones I tried I think bamboozles?? but did not get on with them AT. ALL. Simply did not seem absorbant enough and i was really disappointed.

Miffster · 09/11/2010 20:15

Specialist recruitment consultant approached him.:) It is hard to get jobs there - I won't be able to get a work VISA there.

Bum genius - ooh, have seen them on sale in baby shop and the looked lovely.

Have just found local nappy network has trial evenings and gives out vouchers so might go along and see, armed with MN recommendations

Big fan of Bumgenius (I use the V3s). They're so reliable and easy to use - I've been using them since about 4 weeks post-birth (I used disposables for the first weeks as I had a c-section so bending to do laundry was a bit of a hassle). I also use Wonderoos v2 and love them - they're also pocket nappies and come in some supercute patterns (which may be nice if your LO is spending time just in his nappy Smile).

I also have some two-part nappies - mainly tots bots bamboozles with motherease rikki wraps - as they're great for containing poo in the early months and great for night-time use (though I also use boosted BGs and Wonderoos for nighttime).

I checked your profile and see you're Hackney/Islington so you can see Bumgenius for yourself in Born in Stokey. I live in Finsbury Park, and went to a nappuccino by The Washable Nappy Company when I was looking when pregnant. Nappy Ever After near Kings Cross also do regular demos. The Real Nappies for London voucher scheme means you can get fifty odd quid towards the cost of nappies, which is really handy.

Cloth Nappy Tree also has really good reviews, which I find helpful when

In terms of packing, when we go abroad we vacuum pack them down (you can get vacuum pack bags from John Lewis and the like), which really helps with regards to saving on suitcase space.
