4.5 yo SN ds been training since c5-6 wks ago. was doing really well - asking, needed reminding, hardly any accidents after 2 nd day, but wont use our toilets. can hold on for few hours too.

back to school, ams only atm, 1 st wk was great ; sat on their toilet, sometimes did something, not always. even got a star one day.

but last wk ( 2nd wk) gone to pot. turns out teachers 'just take them' to loo. he hasnt asked. had quite few accidnets and loads of changes of clothes.

hes wary anyway of new children. just wondering if anyone else has had problems when gone back to school and toileting. i dont think its so much regression just simply teachers not reminding him, perhaps they're so caught up in their work with the children they forget or dont have much time. will have to speak to them tomorrow.
teacher even asked me mid last wk do i think hes trained?! cheek of it. of course, the way he is anyway will take longer than normal to be totally independent in thate dept. but hes doing so well atm. he does go on his own at home occasionally.
always tell ds to ask/say when he needs to go.

I cant help regarding personal experience but when I was a pschool teacher I found that often children were later to train at pschool than at home. There was as you say less chance for teachers to recognise when they needed to go, the children got far too busy and the whole public toilet thing got a fair few children stressed as well. Focus on the achievements he has made and he will get there at school in time.

Ds1 (now 5yrs) has SN and finally got the hang of toilet-training a few weeks before starting school. He was then 4yrs 2mths old.

He wouldn't use the toilets at home for the first few months so we had to keep a potty-chair out for him. He was fine with the child-sized toilets that the schools have though. He had a few accidents at school when he first started but his teacher told me that other children who had been toilet-trained for far longer were having a similar number of accidents. Ds1 used to get caught up with whatever he was doing in class and would leave it too late to get there in time.

The teacher's policy was that at the beginning of Reception the children would be encouraged to ask if they needed to go but it wasn't necessarily expected that they would ask first. Ds1 is autistic and so didn't 'get' the idea of asking first but eventually got the hang of it.

It might be a good idea to discuss having a chart for him to remind the staff to ask ds if he needs the toilet. This could be at 30-minute intervals (or whatever period of time you think best). If the staff member signs the chart when they ask him then all staff will know when he needs to be reminded next. It will probably be a bit of a pain for the staff to start with but it will probably be less time-consuming than clearing up after accidents.

Does your ds have an IEP? If so then this could be a good target to include.

just asked teachers today whether he is just wetting himself or missing the toilet (like occasioolanlyly at home )! ; they apparently take ds about 4 times during the am. and quote "cant do anymore than that"!! even though they take him he doesnt always produce there.

hes excellent at home and out about. just not good in school.

but atm we've got the problems of him now not wanting eat dinner in school...thats another matter
