She's only 2.5. We have Milkshake on in the morning whilst I get breakfast/other stuff done. We are normally out all day but she's addicted to Shrek and insists on watching it whenever were at home.

She loves art and crafts but has to have Shrek on in background. Aggggrrrr.

there is an off switch - and you are the adult

Bingtata · 07/11/2010 22:15

You could do it slowly? I'm fairly relaxed on screen time, but I do have the rule that we do not have TV on in the background. DD 4.5 quite often puts music on when she is doing arts and crafts, what about a Shrek CD

Dancergirl · 07/11/2010 22:56

I think you know the answer. Either you a) accept the situation and allow her to carry on watching it all the time.....or b) turn it off, she'll make a fuss at first of course but she'll get over it.

Bit of a no-brainer really......

I'm also fairly relaxed about TV but I never let the TV on as background (it drives me nuts!) and I frequently switch the TV off if it's been on for longer than 45 minutes. DD (2.4 years old) is used to me switching it off and she simply slopes off to play. Hurrah! Be firm and set limits. If your DC tantrums when you turn it off, so be it, you are the adult here and you are in charge.

My two DD's (2.6 and 3.6)were starting to get very obsessive about the TV, asking for it to be on all the time so have banned all TV with just half an hour before bed, was a nightmare for the first couple of days but has been about a month now and they don't ask any more and play much more.

What ChasingSquirrels said.

She is 2.5 - she doesn't get to "insist" on anything which you as a parent believe is a bad idea.

wannabeglam · 08/11/2010 15:41

Agree with ChasingSquirrels.

Ban it for a while, and then reintroduce it at selected times for, say, one programme.

Children will walk all over you if they're let.

You'll have to weather the tantrums I'm afraid.

Put music on instead.

My DD (2.4) is obsessed by the Little Mermaid, probably because we let her watch the film a few times on our computer on various recent long car/plane journeys.

She started asking to watch it ALL the time, so we ended up getting a Disney Little Mermaid book and she's actually just as happy looking at the pictures in that as she is watching the film.

So maybe you could get a Shrek picture book and let her look at that when she asks to watch the film? And I agree that a soundtrack CD would be another good idea.

Shrek sticker books!
