Is anyone starting a third year OU course with a new baby?

I have done 2 years of a degree with the OU and was due to start my final year in Jan, baby is due in Jan so I decided that I might have bitten off more than I can chew so to speak-this is my first child - have no experience of anything baby related - and so decided to wait and do final year later.
However, everyone keeps telling me that I'll have plently of time to do my work while small person is asleep, and I'll be off work and so can concentrate Hmm and all this kind of thing.
I don't know what to do.
I want to do it as I want to get it finished so I can get better job etc and provide more for our family, but I really struggled this year as I found out I was pregnant half way through the year and appear to have learnt nothing except how to forget lots of info in a short space of time... Blush

Does anyone have an advice on this? I might just need a kick up the arse - im not sure!! Thanks in advance x

I'm doing a postgraduate course and expecting my first in April. What course is it?

Some are doable as reading while you BF/baby sleeps will be fine (I'm told!) but I wouldn't recommend the last level 3 I did as it involved a lot of time on the computer.

Its AD317, my degree is in Religious studies as I want to teach - eventually!

I think Im gonna go for it, if I did 2 years and worked full time then hopefully I can cope! Hopefully...

Congrats by the way - hope all is well Smile

No one I've done but try speaking to other people who did the course this year and see whether it might be feasible.

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy, the birth and the course!

Hiya I did MT365 this year and it started when ds2 was 5 months old. I was doing 60-90 points a year before that, but just did 40 points this year and the same next year as I thought it would be too much with 2 DC's, and one being so young. I coped well with the smaller workload, saying that I've not had the exam result yet Grin

It depends how much help you have and how 'good' your baby is.

If it's 60 points you need 600 hours.

I'd recommend getting a childminder for the run up to he exam.

Yes! I'm doing exactly the same as you. Baby due a week after my final 60pt level 3 module (DD307) starts in January. What are you studying?

I'm going to give it a go...I suppose we won't know until the LO's arrive as to how hard it will be but the OU offer interrupted study if a year out is needed. Have a look on the OU website for more info.

When do you get your course materials? I get mine at the end of Nov (according to my student page) so intend to use my 6 weeks maternity leave to get ahead..maybe you could do the same?

Maybe we can support each other?

Oh just seen your second post! :)

I started DD303 when my DD was a newborn (I wrote the exam when she was 11 months old and I was 32 weeks pregnant with DD2). It was definitely do-able and I think it's MUCH easier to do a course with a young baby than it is with a toddler or older child.

luckykitty · 11/11/2010 18:51

thank you everyone!
I have registered for it :)
There is no exam for this year! I had to do 2 60 point courses so decided to get the one with the exam out of the way this year so I'm quite pleased about that. DP is being very supportive so Im sure it will all be fine Smile
Apple - im not sure when I'll get the stuff as ive faffed about and left it a bit late, have sent financial application this week so as long as that goes ok then i think it will be mid Dec I get the materials, its showing up that i have registered but its not telling me anything online yet.

It would be really great to have people to chat to about it all, thanks to everyone for reassuring me that it is possible and giving me a kick up the bum Grin

hope everyone is ok x

I've had two babies in my four years of distance learning, and I reckon its much easier to study with a newborn than with an older baby or toddler.
Its really bloody hard with all 3 though!

luckykitty · 15/11/2010 21:58

thats really impressive Bonnie - well done to you! Smile
