New carpet! - Can I ask other mums to put nappies on their newly toilet trained toddlers?

Hi,

Am I being out of order here?

We have a new carpet throughout our house - a light colour. I know, I know, why have a nice new carpet when I've got a toddler (ds just turned two)? But the old one belonged to the previous owners and was pretty scanky!

People are being pretty considerate with it and asking whether they should take shoes off (depends on the weather usually) and to be honest, I'm not usually that anal about these things. But we will still be paying for it two years down the line and I'd like to think it will still be in a decent condition. We paid for a good quality one afterall.

Anyway, my group of mums meet once a week and soon it will be my turn. Now that the weather's turning we will probably be indoors. Some of them have already toilet trained their dds (all just turned two) but it's a bit sporadic. For example, at someone's house the other week one of them just peed on the floor - it was a laminate floor and so not a problem. Easily cleaned up.

So I'm getting a bit concerned. Can I ask them to put their children in nappies just to visit us? They all seem so proud of the fact that they've trained them that they might think this is a bit regressive.

In terms of what's happened at other people's houses - it's generally been good weather so they've played outside and it's not been an issue. Or they don't have carpet on the floor.

To make things more complicated, my ds got a bit of poo on someone's carpet the other week! It's not a regular thing - just an exploding nappy. In fact, he covered his hands in it by having a good rummage! The person who's house it was has got an old carpet and wants to get it replaced, so wasn't too bothered. But does this make me hypocritical?

Any advice out there?

hello unicorn - that is terrible, can't believe they mad u feel that way.

unfortuntately accidents happen, best to invest in a steam carpet cleaner!!!!

Rubineski · 17/09/2005 15:57

Oh, Unicorn, that's awful! What shitty people! (no pun intended!).

Funnily enough, I left this thread to go and do some cleaning! Doesn't happen often but got friends coming round this evening.

As I was wiping away the pubic hairs from the bathroom floor, it all got into perspective! We all leave a trail of crap where ever we go - so why make a fuss over toddler crap?!

As for cream carpet - it's a textured one with a waffle pattern, which seems to be quite good at hiding the dirt.

i think you would be way way out of order asking people to put nappies on. i know i would rather not come to someone's house if they felt so prcious about something like this.

dont shoot me down in flames. you asked for opinions, and thats mine.

inest in a good steam cleaner. they work wonders.

NannyL · 17/09/2005 16:31

I agree with the others... YES it is WAY out of order to ask a newly potty trained child or a potty training child to wear a nappy!

No way would i do it and i probably wouldnt come either!

Kitchen roll and a spray of antinacterial febreeze will do IF theres an accident.

make sure theres a potty in the room, a loo seat for your toilet and let them get on with it!

I do hoover and mop up spills etc much more often zippi, should I be throughly washing it more than once a month? Might invest in a steam cleaner as suggested on this thread...

zippitippitoes · 17/09/2005 18:34

shocked at how often you clean it

not how rarely!!!!

Oh, Rubineski, just coming back to this thread to say how very sane and chilled-out you sound about it all!

And I second the fact that toddler wee is remarkably un-whiffy. Thank heavens, or our front room rug would stink

Rubineski - I can really rate Bissell carpet cleaners Ds2 threw up all over our new beige carpet in the study the other day - quickly sprayed Vanish carpet cleaner on it but still dried as a bad stain. Gave it a quick wash with the carpet cleaner and it's back to looking like new Invest in one - well worth the money if you've got new cream or beige carpets, imo!
