Pip the best christmas present you can give them at that age is cuddles all day.

Our daughter was that age last year so got her an outfit for the day, some books and that was about it - we did get her a stocking though as I am sad! Save your money for later in the year when he is a bit more aware and does want age appropriate things

I'd get him a nice massage or beauty treatment for mum - perhaps a nice book thrown in!

My DD was that age last Christmas and her best two presents by far were £1 stacking cups and a small box of wooden bricks. Both have been played with all year. Also 'That's not my...' series of books (Usbourne) have been great value all year.

No point at all in blowing lots of money... Some tactile books etc and perhaps a nice keepsake if you want a memento of first Christmas.

DS was 5 months when we first got him Fisher Price peek-a-blocks. He was just able to hold them and was soon staring at what was inside them, and shaking the noisy ones.

How about one of those 3 in 1 trikes that grow with then? There's one that can be used from 6 months. They have a handle at that back for you to push with and finally progress to a pedal along trike

I found this was a great toy that mine played with for years.
The front comes off,so she can play with that on your lap etc. Mine never got bored of this.

My DD will be 5.5 months at xmas so have bought her the Fisher Price Learning Kitchen, so cute and not too big (playgym and exersaucer take up most of the floor space in lounge!). Benefits are listed as:
inside the fridge there's shape sorting fun, baby can flip the page on the flip book to hear about foods and learn about colours, 4 play modes include learning, music and imagination more than 15 tunes, designed to engage babies and teach them motor, music, academic skills as they grow
ages 6-36 months.

I asked a similar question before the weekend and got some good suggestions here

Love is the best xmas pressie any child can have.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/11/2010 01:58

Just a bugger to wrap and get in the stocking!

Do you want to get your DS something which he'll get lots of use out over the next few months or something he'll have forever or just a few token bits? If the former, I'd suggest a jumperoo, we got our DD one for Xmas last year when she turned 4mo and she used it every day until around Sept this year; if the second, how about a picture or some of the classic baby books like "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" or a teddy from somewhere like John Lewis which has "Happy Christmas" on one foot and the year on the other foot ; if the latter, then there are some "That's Not My..." Christmas books (eg That's Not My Snowman).

Bits which you'll probably end up getting your DS over the next few months are books from the "That's Not My..."/ "This Is My...."/Baby Play series, stacking cups, stacking rings, those wooden peg jigsaw things, shape sorters, an activity cube and some sort of push along thing for when they're learning to walk so you could always get him some of those.
