Swim nappies - can I just use a pocket nappy?

Hello

We're taking DS (7.5 months) swimming for the first time this weekend as we're off to a resort hotel for a family celebration.

We use pocket nappies (mainly BG) so I'm hoping I can just use one without the liner instead of having to buy a specific swim nappy? Has anyone tried this?

I'm not too worried about him pooing in the water (he's only ever pooed in the bath once) and his poos are fairly substantial these days so no real risk of leaking either (his nappies haven't leaked in months).

Any advice would be welcome Smile

i don't see why not! I think the only risk would be that exposure to chlorine bleach in the pool could cause some damage to either the waterproofing or the elastic on your nappies. It would also definitely invalidate your guarantee from BG.

Um. I used cloth nappies on DS but wouldn't have used one for swimming - I did buy the disposable swim nappies and a neoprene swimming costume to go over them for DS. But that was for swimming lessons in a hydrotherapy pool so we had to be a bit more circumspect about things.

Why don't you try sitting your DS in the bath with his BG nappy on and seeing how much water it holds, how heavy it gets and whether it will fall off? Then go from there.

Don't most public swimming pools have quite strict rules about swim nappies? But then that's probably just to stop people using ordinary disposables which definitely would leak.

Hey Flip
You definitely can use your BG but they recommend you put one aside for swimming use as it will affect the PUL coating eventually. You just use the pocket part with no inserts and it will contain a poo . As the BG are birth to potty nappies you have a swim nappy that will fit for ages Smile
Most swimming pools aren't that strict about what swim nappies you use as long as you use something. Most swim schools are very strict about it though IME and insist on the double nappy system (disp or reusable and neoprene nappy on top)

Thanks for all your replies.

Smac thank you for giving exactly the answer I wanted Grin.

No plans to do swim school stuff - this is just a hotel pool so reckon they'll be fine as long as no risk of a poo.

I have found popper nappies work better as swim nappies then velcro ones.

DS3 used a small Itti as a swim nappy long after he had outgrown them for normal use. Trim and cute as anything without the inserts.

The BumGenius australian website says they can be used as a swim nappy, it says:

'you don't need a separate swim nappy when you use bumgenius pocket nappies. Simply use the outer, minus the absorbent insert, for a very cost effective swim nappy!'

Its aout 3/4 of the page down here:

I always used my Greenkids pocket nappy no problems.
