Nappy rash real nappies

I'm using real nappies (motherease with me wraps). They are great (and i'm quite impressed with myself!), but.. it looks like my ds has got nappy rash - or red areas at the top of his legs. Could you reccomend what i can put on it?

I have been using waitrose baby bottom butter - it's got natural ingrediants - but i don't think it's helping it go away.

He has 'no nappy time' every day for a good 30-60mins to air his bot - but it's still there. Any suggestions?

SM. is it spotty or just red?

pootlepod · 14/09/2005 17:38

If it is at the top of his legs, I 'think' it may well be caused by the binding of the nappies or the wraps. Try poppering the wrap one down or if you are already on the last popper for the wrap try the next size up. Mightwork too for the nappy but with the nappy it is more esentail that you get a good fit. Also check your washing powder, perhaps do an extra rinse or a wash without any powder to eliminate build up. If ds still has this rash he may be sensitive to the bindings and a change of wraps (tots are different) may help.

Is it where the wrap is or where the nappy is?

If it is nappy - what are you washing them in, and how much do you use... DD got better with much less powder and an extra rinse.

Soaking silk liners in camomile tea and honey, and then putting them on damp helped to heal her too - doing that overnight normally cleared it up. Although if it is more his legs, the liner might not touch it...

BTW, I always use Sudocrem.

SpikeMomma · 14/09/2005 18:00

It's around the top of his legs. More red than spotty - but a little 'dotty' here and there - if that makes sense! it's not around the bindings, more adjacent to his little plums .

My nappies are a bit 'crispy' due to the hard water, so i was going to try a spot of vinegar in the wash. I'll try a double rinse to get the washing powder out more.

Use a gentler washing powder. Ecover perhaps. My baby got a rash when I used Bold for a little while but is fine again now I'm back on the Ecover.

NannyL · 14/09/2005 18:35

Metanium cream is v good for nappy rash

SpikeMomma · 14/09/2005 20:22

I use Ecover - doh! I'll try using less and double rinsing.

Will also get some of the cream mentioned.

Thanks for your advice.

Lots of people have this problem with the ME wraps. I good alternative is the Popolini wraps - they are almost identical to the ME ones but for some reason the leg binding doesn't seem to cause red marks as much. The popolini ones are a bit cheaper, both in price and to look at - but work just as well.

RosiePosie · 14/09/2005 20:30

A good, not I good

motherpeculiar · 14/09/2005 20:45

weleda nappy cream is also very good (in case you need yet another cream to try)

Roxswood · 14/09/2005 21:25

I'll second the metanium recommendation, but also say that for redness in the creases of her legs I found sudocrem much better.
metanium does an excellent job of protecting them from poo rash though..

You didn't mention how you are cleaning your lo's bum. Generally water and cotton wool is fine for teenies. Also you could try making some chamomile tea and putting the cotton wool it that (cooled) to clean his bum.
If you are using baby wipes, that could be it. We used them on ds when he was wee, because we were given tons by people. Johnsons pink ones always brought him out in a rash.
Silk liners are also healing and if the rash persists, you could try putting one inside his nappy next to his skin.
Metanium is great for nappy rash
When ds got it quite badly, we started to use a little bit of baby wash on a sponge to clean his bum after poops only and stood him in the sink, for a proper rinse. This and metanium seemed to do the trick.
Plus changing his nappy every two hours, unless he pooped in which case he is always changed immediately.
I hope your lo's bum gets better, poor old thing. Give him a kiss from me.

GeraldGiraffe · 14/09/2005 23:42

and don't use the metanium on the legs because it will stain the wraps yellow.

chipmonkey · 15/09/2005 16:08

PMSL, RosiePosie! Cooperoo says the opposite, that Popolini wraps cause more red marks than ME!

SpikeMomma · 15/09/2005 17:59

I gave him a big hug maisemog and he sends one back!

I don't use baby wipes on him - just water and wipe with cut down terry squares. That's what's so annoying. He doesn't have any unnecessary chemicals on his skin and it's still a bit pink. His bottom is perfect though - no pinkness - just very kissable!!

I don't think it is the wraps causing the soreness - it isn't around the part of the leg where they sit. It's more near his groin.

Looks much better today. I've been changing his nappy more frequently - which has helped i think. I got some sudecream in a tiny pot - so will try that if it flairs up again.

He's currently sprawled on the floor doing no nappy time - so best leg it to guard my carpet from his cheeky little water pipe - it only goes off when i'm not looking!

I had a load of trouble with this and using vinegar in the wash helped loads. My dd started with little bit of redness that spread to the whole of her bum and looked like she was wearing red shorts when she was naked!!! I put vinegar in the fabric softener compartment of washing machine then do extra rinse after - has done the trick. also i use zinc and castor oil cream seems to work same as sudocrem but much cheaper!!!

SpikeMomma · 19/09/2005 19:14

Thanks ca7439. I've discovered vinegar and currently shoving it in with them. Think the nappies are a touch softer (apparantly meant to soften hard water a bit).

I bought some soda crystals the other day too. Not for nappies, but to wash me kitchen floor and get the moss of me patio! I'm looking out for bicarbonate of soda too. The properties of all three are impressive. I've regressed to the 1950's - clearly way too much time on me hands!
