Ideas for healthy snacks

I love cooking with my dcs and they enjoy it too. However, after finding out to my great horror that my ds(6) needs 3 fillings, I am looking for ideas for savory treats. We used to make lots of sweet cakes and biscuits but i have decided to limit stuff like that now.
Any ideas for healthy cooking would be much appreciated. My mind has gone blank.

cubes of cheese
cold sausages
slices of ham

bear in mind that ANY eating between meals, sweet or savoury will stay on the teeth and start to cause decay if not brushed away

Savoury muffins - spinach & cheese, broccoli & cheese, pumpkin & parmesan etc. I make mini ones and they freeze really well.

Veggie nuggets - random freezer veg & breadcrumbs and cheese baked into nuggets. Also freeze very well.

Cheese straws (like cheesy breadsticks)

Cheese or sardines on toast also make a nice snack

Scotch eggs

Also make sure toothbrushing is done well, you do it for him now & again, & always done at night (prob know this already, just stating in case). Only say this cos my DS has sweets every day Blush & no fillings, yet....although maybe speaking too soon (he's 5)

Bananas, grapes, tangerines, pomegranate, melon, apple

Home made popcorn, bread sticks, rice cakes with marmite on, Nairns cheesy or oaty buiscuits

Raisins, Goji berries, dried apricots or dates. Dried mango and dried pinapple

fruit, especially dried fruit is just as bad for teeth as sweets if left on the enamel

This always goes down well with my DD and her friends....

Parmesan Crisps
You will need :

Tortilla Wraps
Parmesan Cheese - I have used the dried variety but I suppose any would do.

Cut shapes with biscuit cutters, sprinkle with parmesan cheese and bake in the oven for approx 10mins or until golden brown. The tortillas crisp up, they taste fab Grin

Thanks for all your ideas. Until now i had just not thought of the implications of food on teeth. I know that is ridiculous. I would happily give snacks of dried fruit, bananas, etc and they drunk tonnes of pure fruit juice. Why do health visitors tell you to give them snacks mid morning and mid afternoon? I class myself as a fairly intelligent mum. My kids don't eat a load of sweets and crap but i think more needs to be done by health visitors to teach mums about dental health.

Its the fruit juice that has ruined the teeth it should only be drunk diluted with meals.

mine24 · 26/10/2010 16:47

Yes. The dentist said it is like giving them neat coke! I have cut it out altogether now.

Try to limit eating between meals, particularly nibbling for ages on something. It takes the mouth 30 mins or so to return to an alkaline state after eating, and if you eat little and often (even non-sugary food) the mouth stays acidic and teeth are more vulnerable.

If you want to give sweets/cakes etc best you do it with, or straight after a meal.

So is it ok to give dried fruit etc at the end of a meal. I don't know whether to cut that stuff out altogether.

Veggie sticks
Marmite rice cakes
Nuts
Cubes of cheese
Whole fruit (not fruit juice) and grapes are particularly high in sugar / bad for teeth
Baked tortilla crisps
Crackers
Ham etc
Olives

Mine likes a bowl of frozen peas as a snack, grated cheese, we also have sugar free ice pops in the summer (guess that depends on how you feel about sweeteners tho).

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 27/10/2010 09:22

can I rephrase my whole fruit thing. I mean whole fruit is good. Fruit juice is very high in sugars and has less of the fibre I believe. Also, of the whole fruits, grapes are very high in sugar!

NannyPatsSausagePlait · 27/10/2010 10:32

mine 24 dried fruit at the end of a meal is not the best time, although there is usually enough saliva to stop too much damage -cheese is better as it neutralises acid

What about yoghurt? that can't stick to teeth?
