Realisation of DC becoming grown up

Good Morning!

Just had one of those moments when seeing DD out the front door. She's 12 in 4 weeks, started at high school after summer this year.

She was in her very smart winter coat - double breasted, button up collared, fitted to the waist then flares from there down to just past the knees - I'm sure there's a name for the style but I'm not a fashion follower so clueless here!

Anyway. She was walking down the front steps and it just dawned on me how much she looks like a young lady now rather than a little girl. I know the smart uniform, coat, etc. likely did it but the way she was carrying herself, it was just one of those...moments.

Not a tearful one. Not an 'aww, isn't she lovely' just a, 'wow, when did that potential adult emerge!' feeling. Can't quite put it into words.

I'm sure by the time DD gets home, the hair will be windswept, the tie askew and likely the coat will be wide open and she'll be generally windswept and rain-drenched but I think it was a wake up call that DD isn't going to remain a child for too much longer...Shock

That is so sweet. My DS has just turned one so have not had that moment but i remember my dad having one with me; we were on a family day to the beach and us ladies went to the loo. Mum came out and dad was all flustered and asked "where is mrspear?" my mum pointed to me leaning over the sea wall ... he was open mouthed and asked "when did she grow up?"! I was 15.

Thanks mrspear. Your poor dad and you'd been in front of him all along :-)

DD came in just as I thought this afternoon. But it was an interesting glimpse this morning.

I went through that stage without both DS 15 and DD 13, when I was looking round for children and glanced what I thought was a young adult and it was my DC. it is very odd when you don't recognise your children.

I have looked down to see them only to find I have to look up insteadGrin
DS towers over me and DD is already a few inches taller.

DD is starting to edge ahead of me in height but that's not surprising. I only make it to 5' on good days!! :)

bruffin · 22/10/2010 20:39

I'm only 5'2 but my DS is now 5'11 and DD is about 5'5 Shock

Dsd is 13 now and a such beautiful young lady, sweet natured and kind. Seems like yesterday that I met her for the first time and she was only 4 and couldn't tie her shoelaces Smile

Luckily dd is only 4 and a half so that will keep me going for a while in the mothering game...

January73 · 25/10/2010 09:31

oh, bruffin I think DD is going to tower over me. Very soon. Noticed yesterday she has now taken a stretch and is just starting to edge ahead of me in height!

Oh, yes, shoelaces nemofish. That was a stretch of patience for me until I got DH to do the teaching on that front - I think my left handedness made it look backwards to DD!

Yep completely with you. They (11 and 15) are young adults now. Ask them what they think about all sorts of things.

I know what you mean. With my lad that feeling crept up on me bit by bit as I began to realise he was getting as tall as me and his voice was croaky and squeaky sometimes, and he won't let me in the bathroom when he's having a bath anymore Grin But with DD it totally poleaxed me when all of a sudden I saw her one day and she was a mini-grown-up - just like you really.

onceamai · 25/10/2010 10:06

I agree - it's hard to always remember though but they always say yes! Just waiting for them to offer me one - now that would be grown up.

frankenfanny · 25/10/2010 10:23

My DD just turned 11 and I feel like that a lot lately.... trying not to think of the ABBA song...don't need to be blubbing this time in the morning :)

MaudOHara · 25/10/2010 10:31

[sob] DS has just turned 11 and is creeping up on me - his voice is quite deep and he's broad shouldered and wearing mens clothes and shoes. He watches the news and forms all manner of opinions on things and I can't help him with his homework any more as I don't understand it - I'm officially old

MaudOHara · 25/10/2010 10:32

gah just turned 12 even Blush

bruffin · 25/10/2010 10:39

frankenfanny- just the thought of that song has just made me blubber. Excuse, I have a cold and we are low on staff and am by myself.

We went shopping to Lakeside yesterday and kept losing DD 13 because I don't recognise her anymore from a distance IYSWIM. I am looking for a much smaller child.
I keep forgetting it's 4 coffees now not just 2, but DS will offer to make us scrambled egg or pancakes for breakfast on a sunday sometimes.

January73 · 25/10/2010 15:23

frankenanny - slipping through my fingers by ABBA? you know it's the exact one I thought of too!!

At least I'm not the only one out there who had one of those moments :-)

Yup, January, the very one :-

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that Im losing her forever
And without really entering her world
Im glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see whats in her mind
Each time I think Im close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when shes gone theres that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I cant deny
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
(slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did but most we didnt
And why I just dont know

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see whats in her mind
Each time I think Im close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers...

Slipping through my fingers all the time

Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile...

January73 · 25/10/2010 17:38

Wait until her bra size is bigger than yours- that was the moment I realised she was very grown up (age15)

poobumfartbollocks · 25/10/2010 17:46

Can I add mine?

When he goes off with his girlfriend for a weekend in her parents caravan...

and it doesn't occur to you until after he'd left that aged 19 he might be having sex.

(he swears blind they didn't)

January73 · 25/10/2010 18:34

lol, simbacat. I really hope she doesn't get a bra size bigger than mine. :)

poobumfartbollocks - what was that old saying, if this tent be a-rocking, don't come a-knocking
I guess it applies to caravans too! :o

Simba - I hope my DD's get their norks from their father's side of the family. They really do have excellent breasticles. (Not much else to recommend them though lol)

January - that is not a thought I wish to have in my head thank you......
