A few questions - newborn....

Hi all,

My baby is 3 days old and I have a few questions!

How often should we be changing her nappy? obviously other than if it's wet or dirty?
How often can I apply lansinoh nipple cream? I have stupidly thrown the box away, the tube doesn't tell you anything and my nipples are cracked already. I am going to speak to a breastfeeding counsellor tomorrow I think as they are quite sore!
When I breastfeed I get period type pains, which I know is my uterus contracting but when does this stop as it's quite painful!!

Hmm.....I'm sure there was more!

Thanks in advance!

Change her only when wet or dirty, no need to otherwise

Lansinoh every time you bf, use it as much as you want really.

You can take paracetamol for after-pains which some women find more painful than contractions!

Oh, and congratulations! Smile

I agree with Dinahrod

Congratulations!

What DR said.

By about the 5th day I felt like I was applying Lansinoh with every breath! It is your very best friend.

healing cracked nipples from kellymom

latrucha · 21/10/2010 22:12

If you;ve got cracked nipples you can also use a burns dressing you can buy in the chemist. The brand I used has been discontinued so I can't give you a name but it's a pure lanolin on a gauze. This is the one I used.

Apart from that, what dinahrod said. (Paracetamol is safe while bf)

latrucha · 21/10/2010 22:13

Bf counsellor a good idea too.

Congratulations!! What others said but I found Kamillosan brilliant and a fraction of the price if you need more than one tube (which I did).

DinahRod · 21/10/2010 22:21

Modern nappies are very good at keeping wetness away from babies' skin. Obviously if she poos change her but you should just be able with a squeeze of the padded part of the outside of the nappy/the weight of it, tell if it's wet. Some people don't like using barrier creams but if dc's bottom looks a little red I use sudocrem and bepanthen when it did look sore (just after first jabs).

Thankyou so much for all of that! We thought we shouldn't be changing her too often but wanted to double check!

If her clothes are clean how often should we change them, if she's been in an outfit all day should we change her for the night? I presume not? We are topping and tailing and then changing her outfit each morning is this right? I'm sure these questions are really ridiculous and you're all wondering who on earth let me have a baby....sorry.

I think my nipples are cracking because of poor latching, I will be phoning a breastfeeding counsellor this afternoon I think!

Thankyou again for your help!

How often you put clean clothes on iis totally a personal choice. I always put on a clean outfit in the morning then into something else in the evening. Partly because i felt it helped in a few months to make a distinction between daytime and bedtime that they were always in the habit of getting changed for bed.

mrspear · 22/10/2010 09:02

first congrats

not silly questions - i changed ds's clothes every morning and night BUT he posseted (a little sick) allot. If your child doesn't than IMO i would say daily is fine. Top and tailing daily is a good idea but use plain water as soap can irritate newborn skin.

Do speak to someone about the latch - when DS was small i use to place him on pillows on my lap. Do look at kellymom website and google for breastfeeding pictures / videos

My kids wore sleepsuits all day and all night. I would change them either when they threw up on them, or, on the rare occasion when this hadn't happened in 24 hours, once a day.

I found it easier to get into a routine of nappy changing after a feed. Feeds were every 3/4 hours.

I used Lansinoh evey half an hour for a month. That's the way I remember it, anyway.

mollycuddles · 22/10/2010 11:11

Hi. You can still get jelonet. At least I bought it by the stack only a few months ago. Lansinoh before and after every feed or when I showered. I changed nappies and clothes as little as possible. Sleepsuits only and changed after a bath or at night anyway even if not bathing (no need to bath every day at this stage).

cece · 22/10/2010 17:16

My babies only wear babygros for the first 3 or 4 months. I used to change them if they were dirty from poo or posseting. Otherwise daily.

DC1 was bathed daily. DC3 was bathed about once a fortnight. They both seem to have survived OK...

Laninsoh is fine for babies so think it is OK to use as much as possible. Half hourly or hourly if cracked nipples really will help. Especially if you sort out the latch issues.
