and i quit! Ive never felt so humilated in my life. The class was full of 16 year olds that had known each other from school. As the tutor was getting to know each person , asking what school they went to she got to me...." eh i left school 14 years ago"! Really she replied, hence all the sniggers etc! Managed to cope with the kids talking over the tutor etc.
Then went to student services to fill in forms for help with childcare, travel, etc...now been told there funds havew been cut by 40% and id have to pay for everything! Couldve cried....still annoyed now! She said they are encouraging the 19 yr olds and under.....not fair me thinks!!!

Oh no - what course were you doing? I started college last week and most of the people in my group are 30-40 years.

We do have one young one at about 17-18 - perhaps she doesn't like all us oldies!!! hee, hee

Thats terrible!! I'd hate that!! I remember when I was doing GCSE Math.. the fellas in the class all knew each other from school too, and they were horrid!
We had to make do with them shouting all over the top of the tutor and she'd spend more of her time telling them to shut up, or re-explaining things to them..than she did teaching us!! It was truly awful.. wonder why i failed

NomDePlume · 13/09/2005 13:45

goldilocks, my local college does GCSE courses as evening classes. You can also do it as a correspondence course with loads of well known companies (like ICS), so no need to step into a college at all !

gigglinggoblin · 13/09/2005 13:46

that sounds terrible goldilocks. isnt there an equivalent course for grown ups? they are called 'stage A' here, not sure if thats the case all over the country. might be worth asking and seeing if you could switch

NomDePlume · 13/09/2005 13:48

GCSE maths with Oxford Open Learning. You can pay in £24.50 installments, too

your local adult education centre will have daytime classes - don't give up!

must've been awful for you, but don't let it put you off the whole idea

gothicmama · 13/09/2005 16:20

Check to se if your college/ council do education in the community , ours do and you can do gcse, first aid type course etc at the community centre fees paid for if in receipt of benefit and creche provided.

spacedonkey · 13/09/2005 16:21

goldilocks - you might want to look at the Open University. If you're on a low income you get a substantial grant which should cover your fees, plus up to £250 towards books and materials

fireflyfairy2 · 13/09/2005 16:55

Spacedonkey do you have a link, or any idea where to find out what you would be entitled to on an OU course?? An online friend of mine is thinking of doing a PGCE (I think) thru OU and she was wondering what funding she would get. I googled OU for her but could find no info on what she would be entitled to..she already has some points from a nursing degree she was doing a few years back (I think all this info is right!) But she said a full time Uni course wouldn't suit her needs as she is a single parent and doesn't have c/care etc.. any info you would happen to have would be brilliant.. but if you don't have it, thanks anyway for letting me see she may be entitled to help towards her books etc...
