Anyone tried controlled crying?

We started trying two nights ago. This is day 3. DS crys as soon as we leave the room. Once he is asleep sleeps well, through till about 7am. He always has slept well but we felt it was time to have a bit more routine.
Before this attempt he would just nurse with me till he was asllep or virtually asleep then we would but him down.
I hate hearing him crying (it goes on for about 1 1/2 hours and i feel like a crap mother. But I feel equally crap about not having a structured routine.
Does it work?
Will it get easier?

It can work and we did try it with DD1 who adapted after a few nights. But it depends on child, whether they know how to get to sleep, and how you feel about it. We did Gradual withdrawal with DD2 as Controlled crying just wasnt for her as she relied on us so much to get her to sleep, It worked but took much longer.

What method are you using? Some people think CC is just allowing your child to cry themselves to sleep (not suggesting you think this BTW!).
We did it for DD and it did work,I went in after 5 then 10 then 15 minutes. It worked after a night or two.
If you're consistent then it should work soon for you.
Having said that some LO's cry as they are winding down.
I followed a book called 'teach your child to sleep through the night' and also the Millpond sleep clinic book.
How old is your DS?

It did work for us, it took 3 nights when DS was 8 mo.
Felt guilty but was so exhausted that I felt there was no alternative.

Can't remember which book for certain but may have been 1st one Mumcah mentioned.

6mo. We're using same method as Mumcah.
