Yesterday afternoon, whilst changing his nappy,I saw,in horror that my baby had a 5 centime coin in his mouth.I tried to get it out,but by the time he was back off the changing table it had been swallowed.I held him upside down(almost) but only mucus came out, then rushed over to my neighbours as dp was using the car to take his mum back to the airport after staying with us,typical!
Anyway,we rushed off to the local doctor who gave him a quick check over, left the room and came back with three different sized coins and asked me which one I thought hed swallowed,I said I thought it was the 5 centime one though it was the biggest and looked too big to swallow comfortably,as he had done.He then gave me a note for the urgence at hospital 10 miles down the road. After my neighbour drove tortourously slowly to the hosp,we were seen pretty soon, and sure enough there was a little white circle in the middle of the xray,in his stomach.I was then told we could go home and if it hasnt come out within a week he will have to go to one of two childrens hospitals to have it removed.
So,thanks for reading and does anyone have any idea what the chances of a successful emptying of the piggy bank are within that time or any experience of this problem?!!

DD1 swallowed a massive china lid from her dolls teaset when she was 3. I don't know to this day how on earth she got it down as there is no way I could have swallowed something that big, but she definitely did as it was there on the xray, like a massive flying saucer in her stomach. I worried so much about how it would come out and then worried even more when I'd found nothing after 2 wks poking around in the toilet! Took her for a second xray which confirmed it had come out - without her or anyone else noticing. My SIL who is a GP said that anything you can swallow with choking will come out OK as the oesophagus is as narrow if not more so that the rest of your guts. Hope this helps, happy hunting!

My DD swallowed a penny when she was about 2 - it came out the next day with no trauma. We were told it would do no harm. Good Luck.

it shoudl wash itself straight through, the asophogus (i know i cant spell) is thinner than the rest of the route so she should be fine!

my mum's friend had a dd who swallowed a piece of lego - they lived in Africa at the time. the doctor told her to cook some leeks, which would wrap themselves around the offending object and help her pooh it out!

she survived anyway - she's 32 now.

My big sister swallowed the key to my big bro's clockwork train - he was v indignant as he'd only just got it for his birthday, apparently!! The dr told my mum to feed my sis porridge to coat any sharp edges and it passed through without a problem. This is a bit of a family legend, as I wasn't even born when it happened, lol!

my ds swallowed a 10p piece and it lodged in his throat then passed down - it passed out 8 days later and thats quite a lot of poo to be looking through

suedonim · 14/09/2005 16:50

Lol, Hausfrau! It all came about through a sibling quarrel. My sis took the key from my bro, to annoy him. When he tried to snatch it back she put it in her mouth to stop him from getting it. He then thumped her on the back and...oops...down it went!!!

fimac1 · 14/09/2005 17:11

Dd did the same at 18 months with a one cent piece - had to have x-ray (USA) to ensure it had not gone into one of the lung vetricles and not the stomach - as it was in the stomach they were happy for nature to take its course - would suggest x-ray if if doesn't come out on its own?...

Surprised that she only managed this once as she put everything into her mouth

lucy5 · 14/09/2005 17:13

Has there benn any change? Seriously, I hope all is well.

lucy5 · 14/09/2005 17:13

Good News!,
the coin came out in this mornings nappy, all shiny and new,if a little stinky. It was only a little one centime after all that worry, but for some reason I thought it was a 5 centime, which is quite a lot bigger.
Also just recieved through the post an xray with said coin in centre, dont know what Im supposed to do with it,but think Ill frame it along with the coin,ds will have a laugh when hes older...
