How the hell do I change my 8 month old's nappy?

DS doesn't want to let me (or anybody else) change his nappy. The moment I lay him on his back, he flips himself over and tries to crawl away. He always resists if I try to stop him, and cries when I turn him on his back again (before beginning trying to escape again). The whole thing has become stressful for both of us.

Often he wriggles away before I'm able to wipe his bum. He then plonks himself down somewhere, leaving a lovely brown arse-print for me to clean up.

I've tried giving him toys and crinkly paper to hold. I've tried singing to him, which works at first, but not for the whole nappy change. I've tried saying 'no' in various ways. I've tried putting a firm hand on his tummy. I've even tried changing him in the bath (in the hope he will realise there's no point trying to crawl away). It doesn't work.

Nappy changes when we're out and about are a nightmare.

Help?

I used a Rabbitts mat for DS. I don't know why I'm bothering to recommend it as so many people seem to get all horrified at the thought of strapping a baby down for a nappy change. Hmm It does turn a full-on tussle into a short job even though the DC don't like it, so on average it's less stressful for them IMO. I couldn't do the sitting on the floor pinning him down thing as I had a bad back and needed to change him at a higher level (I used the sofa in his room).

After I used it on DS for about 3 weeks he learned to lie quietly anyway. If he tried to escape I would wave the strap at him and he usually just lay back down in a resigned sort of way.

As has been said, I used the pinning down gently with my feet and it worked well, got lots of strange looks from family members though

I used to strip off pants socks etc in bedroom then take them to the sink in the bathroom and take off nappy bung straight into bin and wash bum in sink with lots of lovely warm water, they couldn't go anywhere as being held up but they liked the splashing on their bum and it got them very clean very quick and I could twist around and wash the front and when job was done let them splash their toes which they loved then dry with their "bum towel" (their own bum flannel when they were small and a hand towel when bigger) that's how I always did poopy nappy's once they got into the running away screaming blue murder when tryin to change stage... It was so quick and they enjoyed it! Best of luck
