Best wrap for newborn to go over terries/muslin squares?

I am planning on using cloth with DC2, but I didn't start using cloth with DD until she was 3 months old. All my wraps and shaped nappies are size 2/medium so probably won't be suitable for a newborn, unless it is a whopper.

I have a load of muslin squares and terry squares that I used as back up nappies for DD which I think will work for a newborn with the right fold, but just wondering what the best wrap will be to go over them? The motherease riki ones I have came up very high over DD's tummy despite her being long, so I'd be a bit concerned about buying some small ones in case they irritate the baby's tummy button in he early days. I seem to recall DD not being very 'bendable' in the middle either when wearing them and sitting on my lap!

Also, how many do you think I'll need? I'll only get a few weeks wear out of them so don't want to spend much. Would 2 be sufficient?

Finally, has anyone used just plain muslin squares folded like a terries in the early days with some sort of wrap? Would that work?

TIA

Hi - yes muslins will work in the first few weeks, don't even need to be folded like a terry, you could just pad fold (like a prefold) and as long as the wrap fits well then it will be just fine.

In terms of wraps I would recommend the fairly new Lollipop PopnGro onesize. It is adjustable in height with poppers at the front and then velcro fastened at waist. Think they are designed to fit from around 7-8 lbs but when done up on smallest settings I reckon they'd fit a smaller baby as well. They perform great too and come in block colours if you don't want all white.

Thanks very much, I'll look them up. As DD was over 8lbs I'm not expecting a small baby this time :)

You're welcome. I love them, and I have lots of customers who love them too, so feel very confident that you will get on very well with them.

I used Onelife wraps initially with my second son. We used disposables for the first week or so, just until the meconium had gone, then used tots bots nappies with the Onelife wraps. The XS size has a cut out bit that comes below the tummy button / chord. It worked really well. Once we needed a bigger size, we went up to the tots bots wraps. They're velcro so pretty adaptable. He was 8lb 3oz when he was born.

I think the muslins will work fine. I used very thin (cheap!) terries with my first son, and they worked well.

I've always gone for more than 2 wraps, though. I wash every other day, so I need 5, but obviously if you were washing more frequently then you'd need less.

Good luck!

I used the Onelife XS wraps when my daughter was tiny (8lbs1oz at birth). They are quite similar to Rikki wraps in that they have velcro and leg gussets, and have the cut-out at the front. They worked well. I also used muslins instead of terries at first- they worked reasonably well although you might want to put a booster in, depending on how long you want it to last.
