3-D glasses, a spy pen, a lego 'pyoomer', a gyroscope, half a transformer, a gun...just a few of the things ds has managed to leave lying around between 8 and 8.45 am today

PLEASE HELP

DS (6, nearly 7) is so farking untidy. He gets some sort of story going on in his head, he goes and find whatever he needs to make it a bit more real, and then when his brain moves on to the next inner story, he leaves whatever-it-was wherever he is. Multiply this by ten times an hour.

We usually have a tidy up before bed, put everything in a basket at take it upstairs. The trouble is that he needs prompting every night and has never, ever altered his behaviour to take into account the fact that he's going to have to tidy up. It's like it's a surprise to him, every singly farking time.

The last thing I want to do is to charge round after him prompting him at every turn to put things away - I don't mind doing it later in the day, he's a kid, he needs to play, etc. But atm I clear the kitchen table, I turn round, and he's put some football cards and a bit of lego technics down and scarpered Hmm

I'm so very not an obsessively tidy person but I don't think I can take many more years of this. Are there any heavy-duty behavioural change techniques I can use that aren't just nasty and boring?

Is there adequate storage for all his toys? Is the rest of the house tidy?

We always tell the kids to put toys they are playing with away before getting out any others. We have the Ikea trofast systems so have a box for Lego/cars/dolls so it's much easier for them.

Also you need to have a clear out of any broken or incomplete toys, much easier to keep tidy if he has a manageable amount to deal with.

I was not a tidy child but my parents had a messy house so I didn't see the point. Friends could never come over to visit anyway. My house is immaculate now and dc's realize toys last longer if they are kept tidy.

Realise - damn iPad and auto correct!

We have Trofast as well. Technically there is room for everything. The house is middling!

It's the airy-fairiness I want to change, gently but firmly.
I can be cooking or doing a bit of household stuff, I turn round for a minute and BLAM! There's a bit of TOY right where I am working.

It's just driving me round the bend! (I don't do well with repetitive tasks.....)
