DTs (21months) not saying much, should I be worried

They say
mummy
da-da
baby
whats that
uh-oh

And that is it, but they do babble constantly.

Do you think it is because they have each other, as they seem to understand each others babbling?

If they're pointing, beginning with pretend play and understand simple instructions too young to worry.

Sorry meant to add, that is what dt1 says, Dt2 only says

whats that
da-da
uh-oh

but she babbles just as much as DT1

DT1 natters away. She can say so much. Current favourite mine! mine! mine!

Don't worry, words will come! Mine are 19months tomorrow!

My dd (17 months) only says hi, mum and dad and as I said on another thread today I am not even sure she means the latter two!

She is progressing fine with everything else though so I am not too concerned.

Jimjams · 11/09/2005 20:27

They're fine then waterfalls.

I have dts almost 3 years old. When DT1 was approaching 2 the HV thought it best to refer her to a speech therapist as she only said 6 words and wasn't linking. I mentioned to the HV that twins are often slightly late in speach but she thought it best.

The speech therapist watched dt2 play and speak and found her to be in the normal realms but slightly behind on speech.

In the last couple of months her speech has improved beyond recognition and is now speaking in sentences and is more easy to understand.

At the time I was worried, more because of what the HV was saying but looking at her now the change is unbelievable and she talks more than dt2.

I think twins can be lazy with speech as they have each other to interact with. If the understanding of commands is there and they are pointing I would try not to worry but if you are concerned that it doesn't hurt to be referred to a speech therapist to put your mind at rest
