IME they just suck at it a bit. Obviously just stay with her and make sure she doesn't get a big bit off and then choke on it. I wouldn't discourage any child eating fruit!

I would remove the skin.

Be careful about choking. If she's never had anything solid she might not know what to do with it. Dd choked on her own phlegm (sorry) when she was about this age, it was terrifying, gawd knows what she'd have made of an apple! So I wouldn't personally. You could cook some and puree it. But I am particularly pathetic and nervy since our choking incident (I rushed to the doctor, it was that scary, she stopped breathing)

she has rusks and rice cakes, the rice cakes sometimes cause gagging,. but not choking.

she has now thrown thew apple slice away, ate about half of it.

If you're sitting with her and keeping a close eye should be ok but apple is a pretty common one for choking - my ds had trouble with it for a long time. I would cut it into very small pieces and he would be fine and then the second my back was turned it seemed he would get a bit caught. I gave up on it for several months and wouldn't let him have it again until after he turned two. Softer fruits are better - ripe pears, nectarine, peaches etc. Apparently the other one that's pretty dangerous for choking (although never experienced it first-hand) are grapes. I still cut them into small pieces for ds.
