One sleep addled new mum here needing an idiot proof guide on how to use the cloth nappies i have. Hoping to save me redoing all the research I did whilst pregnant and get dd out of disposables.

Was given a whole bunch of bambino mio prefolds, and bought some motherease rikki wraps on the advise of mumsnetters as being the best for leakages.

Now I can't seem to put 2 + 2 together and figure putting baby and nappy together. Do I need any creams? Have waitrose baby butter. Any kinds of booster? Have some bamboo inserts. Where does fleece come into it, do I need it, can it just be from a cut up fleece blanket?

I know this may seem a ridiculous post- just need someone to guide me through!

Are you on facebook? I looked on the bambino mio website but couldn't see it but on their facebook page there are two video clips showing you how to fold a prefold on their facebook page. I would do the extra absorbant one as the standard fold means that it is a struggle to fit in the wrap as it sticks out the end.
You generally don't use any sort of barrier cream or nappy rash cream with real nappies as it blocks up the fabric and makes it less absorbant. If you need to use a rash cream then use a paper liner so to protect the fabric. With a newborn you generally don't need to use any nappy cream. If they are changed regularly they shouldn't get nappy rash although teething can aggrevate it. Nappy rash can happen when the ammonia from a wee mixes with poo so change after a poo as quick as you can.
Liners can be paper liners that you flush down the loo or fleece liners - you can buy them or just cut up a blanket as you said. Fleece give a stay dry feel to the nappy. Paper is good for flushing and for when you need to use nappy cream as I mentioned above. You don't have to use a liner at all - I haven't with my breastfed baby as it's so runny that a liner doesn't make much difference. Some people like to use a liner to stop staining on the nappy. Some natural sunlight usually gets rid of nasty stains anyway.
A newborn won't really need a booster but yes you can experiment with boosters as they bet bigger and pee more. Bamboo makes really good boosters.
Rikki wraps are very, very reliable so good choice there Wink.
If you have any more questions just shout and if you don't get on with the prefolds then don't give up altogether there are lots of other things to try. Pocket nappies are my favourite and most husbands/partners/nursery staff can cope with putting a pocket nappy on and off as they fasten like a disposable (well the velcro ones do)
Good luck!
Oh and when it comes to washing dry pailing is best, cold rinse first otherwise the wee smell and poo stains get set in and then wash at 40 or 60 (I always do a 60 wash) use half the recommended amount of non bio and never use fabric conditioner. The wraps if not soiled can be used again with a fresh prefold.
Right think that's all you need to know to get you started.

Smacs, thank you so much, just what I needed. Will be starting dd on the cloth in the morning when I can see what I'm doing. Fingers x!
