Baby wipes - a novice with questions...

Hi all, I'm new to baby wipes, having just used cotton wool and water on LO's bottom until now.

So do you have to wait for the skin to dry, or dry it off before putting the new nappy on? He's never had nappy rash and we'd like to keep it that way if poss!

Thanks for any answers. (Hope it's cool to put this here btw, wasn't sure where it fit best...)

Hi there - I presume you are talking about disposable wipes here? (this section is mainly used by us cloth nappy enthusiasts so just wanted to check!!). I think the skin should dry pretty much instantly as the alcohol in the wipes evaporates, but you could dry it off with a muslin if the skin seems wet. Incidentally, I went from cotton wool and water to wipes and then switched back pretty quickly as the wipes seemed to trigger nappy rash in my LO - he's 13 months now and we are still on cotton wool or cloth wipes and water, we only use disposable wipes when out and about. That might be something to bear in mind if your LO has sensitive skin. HTH Smile

Try different wipes, as they are different. We use Simple (green package, not actually that expensive), and DS seems all right with this, even though his skin is a bit sensitive (eczema).

Hope you find a solution!

Thanks ladies!

Yes I was talking about disposable wipes, sorry but wasn't sure where best to post.

My DS is 7 mo, and I would prefer to continue with cotton wool and water, Eldritch, but the change in his poo now he's having more solids is meaning the cw&w combo just isn't cutting it, especially when we're out!

The muslin idea is good, I'll defo give that a try, thanks again for your replies... Smile

I use Clearly Herbal wipes as they seem to be the only ones that don't contain alcohol, lanolin or perfume and don't irritate ds's skin. But I still dry him after using them - muslins are nice and soft or I use a dry baby flannel (which is a smaller and easier to fit in the nappy bag!)

Disposable wipes do cause nappy rash sometimes anyway due to the chemicals in them but they evaporate quite quickly on babys skin so feels faily dry after. I used them for DS and found simple wipes best, but have used washable wipes and water on the girls as i find these are kinder and get the poo off better lol.

We used cloth nappies and we have a family history of sensitive skin on both sides fo family. I used cw&w until DS was mostly on solids, then started using Boots wipes for sensitive skin - just wipe and re-nappy- and have never had nappy rash. Mostly for nursery and when we are out. Muslins at home.

Yes, dry before putting nappy on. It is heat and moisture which causes nappy rash. I use face cloths (flannels) to dry.

We find that the cheaper the baby wipe the less caustic the list of chemicals (generally).

Asda's two own brand and Sainbury's are fine. Most of the expensive ones I wouldn't use.

With dd1 I was convinced that I must dry her bum before putting on a new nappy, you really don't! Just wipe and put on new nappy. It really is that easy :)
