My dissertation was all organised, last semester I did an excellent research project on poverty, social class, background, parental asspirations and their effects on a child's educational attainment.

I loved it, it is a passion of mine. However, I didn't do the massive subject area justice and I know a 9000 word dissertation won't either. So I have looked to come from a certain angle to narrow the field down, but it is no good I need to look at all the named areas to feel like I have done a decent job. So a few days ago I made the decision to drop this subject area (ok store it away for my Phd) and start from scratch.

4 days on and I still can't settle on a dissertation subject/area/question. I'm on a joint honours education and english lit degree and I have chosen the education pathway for my dissertation.

Please give me ideas, I have to finalise this by Tuesday otherwise my supervisor will not be pleased.

If that wasn't enough I need to write my personal statement for my frickin PGCE application and that also needs to be done for Tuesday. Please someone tell me what they are looking for because I can happily talk about myself and sell myself but I need an angle.

H-E-L-P

Thank you Grin

How about something related but not using the same subject? Could you use children's voices directly and focus on their aspirations or what they feel they can achieve? I've seen some interesting journal articles asking what children want to be when they grow up! Is it a research dissertation?
Or just pick something that has loads of literatue attached to make your life easier. Gender and educational attainment or similar?

I haven't done a PGCE application as I'm taking a slightly different route but I would focus on any experience you have had in a school and your ability to cope with a high workload.

Thanks Tippy. I have had a go at narrowing it to an angle but I just keep coming back to the title so I am stepping away from it all together.

Gender and educational attainment was one I have toyed with, as is parental involvement, and the change in standing of teahers within society. I like the sound of all of them but I'm waiting for something to really grab me.

High workload is a good point, thank-you. Not had a lot of classroom time (think hours, not days) but I have organised a morning a week, over the next year helping in a special school's English department (I want to do secondary English). I also thought I would discuss my communication skills (which are my strongest point) and highlight why I want to tech etc

For God's sake ignore my grammar and spelling, I type quickly with two fingers and don't preview - life is too short Grin

Me too, and cannot cope with laptop keys so am always making horrible typos at the moment.

I would say yes to the communication skills and why you want to teach. Focus on anything you've done as well as the degree like the voluntary work and any extra qualifications. Don't forget to mention transferable skills from your previous life!

Oh and I am a Governor (not a parent governor) so I suppose I should mention that.
