Tell me I will get my pelvic floor back

Oh My God, Im in shock.

I went to a high impact aerobics type class tonight, first one since having my second 9 months ago (my first was a c-section).

I was actually pissing myself during the jumping jacks. Yes, proper wee and everything

Now, I always prided myself on not pissing myself - it's not a high achievment but one in which I held myself in high esteem.
Whilst my girl friends joked about laughing/sneezing then weeing, I sat smugly thinking, not me, oh no, I can hold my wee in my bladder at will.

I can't believe it. Has anyone actually been able to restore their pelvic floor back to normal through excercise?

Do you think this is normal after 9 months or is it a problem I should see about? An incontinence type thingy.

Seriously though, I really want to be able to go to classes and keep fit without the fear of this. If it kept happening i'd not be able to go again. Blush

i don't know anyone who could do jumping jacks post children, but maybe i just have a lot of leaky friends

onimolap · 01/10/2010 20:29

Yes, you can get it back just as you can recover any voluntary muscle control through exercise.

This means you must do pelvic floor exercises; at least daily, and ideally several times a day. If you can't remember how to do them from antenatal classes or whatever, then most physios can give instruction - and can do a full assessment (don't know what that involves, I couldn't face one).

onimolap don't say that I have a slight prolaps and have been reffered to a phsyitherapist. The gyni appointment was bad enough.

I'm nearly 50 - dcs 15 and 16 - and there's nothing wrong with my pelvic floor! I can do as many star jumps as you like - sneeze, cough, you name it! There is hope for you yet! Grin

It hurts when I pee or have a full bladder and I cant cough or sneeze without peeing there is a bulge in my vagina that aches and makes sex painful.

I would have had surgery but because I am very young my gyni said try phsio first because younger muscles repair better and he is reluctant to give surgery without trying to repair.

Do you have any other symtoms? After DC3 it was fully restored, DC2 however was fully engaged from 30 weeks and although she was not overly large she was too big for me IYSWIM. Pain during sex or emptying of your bladder? If you are young take comfort in the fact that my gyni said you can repair even a badly damaged pelvic floor.

Yes you can get it back, but you have to do the exercises properly, and you have to actually do them.

I'd be straight of to a pelvic floor specialist. Yes it was pretty intrusive, but the lady I say was lovely and had the knack of being completly professional but making you feel like she was your new best friend.

I'm recovering from PGP/SPD, and am quite envious of you being able to do high impact aerobics. I'm still having problems walking, but my pelvic floor is pretty much perfect :)

Good luck and it can be sorted

katy I don't think I can do high impact aerobics. Im too scared to go back!

bigofnorks Im 34 in a few weeks so not that young I suppose If by young you mean in my 20's (I wish).

I hadn't leaked before I did my class. I have however, noticed that as soon as I had her my bowels haven't been the same.

It feels like the power has went out of them Blush.

I strain alot and nothing happens and get constipated alot. I was ignoring it and trying to keep up eating fresh fruit for brekkie which helps.

Gawd listen to me, I feel like im coming up for 54 not 34. Why does nobody tell you this shit (pardon the pun).

fortyplus Lucky moo. Did you never have a pelvic floor issue afterwards, no difference at all? Natural births? Or did you do alot of excercise.

Im still BF so apparently, according to other posts Ive read since, there can be a slight improvement afterwards.

I suppose Im a bit upset because my gran has full front and back prolapse. Completely incontinent and has recently had a colostomy bag fitted. She is totally miserable and embarresed (87). Her's completely hangs out at times though so I was wondering what slight meant.

Im going to go and see my nice Doc who has 3 young DC's herself and is around the same age.

Hopefully she is pissing herself regularly and hasn't poo'd for months!

No, hopefully she was pissing herself etc, got better and will do the same for you :)

PS I'm 38

fortyplus · 02/10/2010 20:42

Hi

2 natural births - ds1 9lb 8oz - no tears. Only an 18 month gap to ds2.

For a while afterwards I'd have minor leaks - nothing major. But a few years of exercise and horse riding and I've never had a problem since. Smile

Faaamily · 02/10/2010 20:44

Yep, you can get it back. Had two sections, but first was a huge baby and left me with 'wee when you sneeze/cough/jump about' type issues. Took about 3-4 months of doing the dreaded pelvic floor exercises and I got back to normal. Had no issues in second preg or afterwards. Do it!

AnyFuleKno · 02/10/2010 20:45

I used to have problems like this for a while after giving birth. Three years on and having not done much about it, things are back to normal thank goodness.

puddlepuss · 02/10/2010 20:51

Does anyone get a massive urge to pee when they do their pelvic floor exercises? I really try to do them (and I really really need to) but I find it so uncomfortable and have to run to the loo after 5 or 6. What am I doing wrong?

note: my name has nothing to do with this! Grin

Faaamily · 02/10/2010 21:02

Dont get urge to wee, but hated doing them. Made me cringe. Just felt...ick! But forced myself when the wee issues started. Better late than never Grin

ClimberChick · 03/10/2010 07:55

I found I was fine with exercise to start with, but then got worse. I've taken a 2 month break, doing PF on work days and going to try going for a run again and see if I cam do more than a mile without leaking.

Hopefully report back soon Grin
