Potty training going on FOREVER!!!

I know it's normal to still have 'occasional' accidents ages after potty training but what counts as occasional?? My daughter (DD? - sorry, new on here and just getting used to the terminology!)has just turned two and has been out of nappies for ten weeks now. I know she knows what she's doing as if she's naked in the morning or bathtime she'll wee on the potty only if she needs to and she will ask to go in the days when she feels like it. BUT she still can have three or four days at a time where she'll have three or more accidents and doesn't even appear to notice. Has anyone else out there experienced this - it's so frustrating!!

I have never experienced quite what you describe dollybird as I potty trained all my children a lot later than you. My last child ds3 is being potty trained now at 2 and a half. We have been at it 4 weeks although we went on holiday in the middle of that so the regime was a bit relaxed then. Anyway, he is fine with the weeing now but has only just today done a poo in the loo. My other children were all nearer 3 when I potty trained them and they all took a couple of weeks max, even ds1 who laos had an aversion to pooing in the right place!

I think the earlier you start, as a general rule, the longer you spend in that not very confident stage where accidents can still happen quite frequently. Perhaps you just need to remind her still - don't assume she will get herself off to the loo. She is doing brilliantly to have gone this far this young in my opinion!

laos should be also!

Thanks for your reply. I think a lot it is that old trap we all fall into of comparing our children! DS potty trained at 21 months and had the hang of it after two weeks(still occasional accidents but we're talking 1 or two a week not three or four a day!. He's now 3 1/4 and probably hasn't had an accident in months and is dry at night too.

I think I probably should have given up after a week, but I'd made the decision and thought she was ready, plus the velcro on her nappy pants was wearing out and as we're not having any more kids I didn't want to buy any more!

Got really frustrated today - she had four accidents today after being at nursery the last two days and having a total of two accidents (both yesterday). I think it must be me! Her one saving grace is that she doesn't have accidents in the car/pushchair or when we're out at the shops or park. This is why I get sooo frustrated as I know she knows what to do when it suits her!

Think we are getting there finally. DD has only had one (wee) accident in the last three days and that included none at nursery today! She is asking for toilet again and said it was ok for me to put the potty away!!

She is quite young to be doing as well as she is, if you ask me.
I have only started trainign my 2.6 y/o dd recently and to be honest I wish I had left it another few months now, even so. Everyone seems to say that if you leave it til later, they learn quicker. My friend, who has had five kids, was pretty apathetic about her dd's toilet raining, and at 3 this little girl just totally toilet trained herself! I think it just happens even if you do nothing.

My god, you've been potty training her since she was 14months? That's extraordinary. I am not in the least suprised she still has accidents. My newly turned four year old son still has accidents. I don't know any just-turned-two year olds who don't have accidents. In fact, I don't know any who aren't still safely in nappies. Try and relax about it. If she's telling you at two that's unbelievable IMO and you should be very grateful indeed!

aloha · 20/09/2005 12:26

Don't be cross with her! She's only very little.

dollybird · 20/09/2005 22:53

Hi aloha, she came out of nappies at 22 months (think you misread 10 weeks for 10 months!). Anyway, she has really turned a corner now - we were away for the weekend and didn't have any accidents in four days and only had one small poo accident today (when she was upstairs & I was down).
I know she will still have accidents for ages but it's still easier washing clothes than nappies!
Does anyone else think before two is too young. I found Gina Ford - Potty Training in One Week really useful, and she says most children are ready somewhere between 18m & 2yrs?

Yes - sorry, did misread - I still think she's doing amazingly well though! Mind you my ds has dyspraxia and his toilet training has been delayed because of that. Very at you!

dollybird · 20/09/2005 23:14

I'm feeling very proud of her now - maybe I've been a bit hard on her!
