Ready to give up on reusables!! help

Hello,

i wonder if anyone can help me. I am new to reusables and have started uing the bumgenius all in one nappies. I also use a paper liner.

The problem is that I cannot get poo stains out. Baby is 10 weeks old and breastfed so she has that very yellow mustard poo. The paper liner, (maybe I'm not using the right one), is Junior joy which I have to cut in half. So doesn't quite catch big explosion poos that go up the back IYKWIM.

Anyway I tried doing just 40 degree wash with detergent as the lady who sold them to me said. Still staining, then I watched Nappy Lady on youtube (she's very good), and did pre-rinse, then 60 degree and the nappies are still stained!!

When the Bum genius were sold to me they were completely unstained...(they are second hand-one user only), and the lady said that she used Nappysan. However, I have heard conflicting views on Nappy san. Some say you must never use it, and Bum genius say not to use it as it affects the fabric, but it has been recommended to me as the only way to get stains out.

Anyone out there have a solution to this problem? Does anyone else use Nappysan on their nappies and nappy wraps or on their All in ones....thanks

Next dry day, hang them out on the washing line. Works wonders :)

itsatiggerday · 29/09/2010 14:22

Hi I don't use bumgenius but occasionally I had some staining after the wash (and I do tend to use 60 degree with a pre wash setting on the machine but dry pail beforehand) but I tend to find drying them out in the sunshine deals with it. I know it's been in short supply recently but even cold weather it's possible and sun seems an effective bleach.

HTH, don't let it make you give up.

Thanks ladies but only problem is we are in flat and I can't hang the washing out!

(by the way I changed my chatname half way through this post so sorry for confusion!)

itsatiggerday · 29/09/2010 14:30

Hmm, can you hang them on a string out the window?! Or hook them up between 2 windows?

KnitterNotTwitter · 29/09/2010 14:32

To be honest I don't worry about stains in nappies. I'm sure that makes me a bit slummy but as all that is going to happen is that my DS is going to stain them again as long as they're clean I don't worry about stains...

... if I meet someone who is going to judge me on the state of the inside of my DS's nappies they're going to be judging me on a whole load of other stuff before they get to start looking at the inside of my son's nappies!!

As yangymac says, sunlight will bleach out poo stains even through the window and even on cloudier days. I wouldn't bother with liners either until she has solid poos - waste of time and money IMO!

ragged · 29/09/2010 18:50

Use old rags as liners; bin when they get poofull. Rags are washable esp. if only wee'd on, and are otherwise much better at preventing the stains from getting to fabric.

wellbalanced · 30/09/2010 09:45

We live in apartment and i put mine on window sill, works wonders..
Junior joy aren't great liners i didnt find and i didnt use liners until 'more solid' poo came along!

belgo · 30/09/2010 09:50

Agree, put them in the sun, if you can get some sun!

missnevermind · 30/09/2010 09:59

I know people will disagree with me and say it will cause problems with absorbency, but we have had no trouble.
I use a fleece liner to protect the nappy and a paper liner on the top for ease of disposal with poos. I also wash the paper liners if they have only been wee'd on.
And the first on this thread, I use nappysan and do not dry outdoors (I don't like bugs or hard nappies Grin)

mumsgotatum · 30/09/2010 18:53

Hi missnevermind thanks for your comments, I think I may try fleece liner and I'm just testing a soak with nappysan now with one nappy only and some socks...I've heard such conflicting thinga about nappysan. From you should never use it, it will compromise the nappy elastic or something, to others like yourself who do use it. As mentioned the lady I got the nappies from did use nappysan and no problems with nappy at all, i guess if you rinse properly.
Can anyone recommend a paper liner, I thought about bambinex, the stuff like a loo roll

missnevermind · 30/09/2010 21:15

Bambino mio and cotton bottoms are the ones I use. They are pretty much identical and quite robust. I dry pail and wash on 60 with a prewash.
I use prefolds and wraps generally but have a handful of AIO's.

chipmonkey · 30/09/2010 22:03

I'm with Knitter on this! Stains do not bother me one whit!

Also never used liners when babies were fully bf, seemed pointless but can see that fleece would be probably better than paper in the prevention stakes.

somewhathorrified · 01/10/2010 10:25

Have you tried Vanish pre wash spray, I know it's full of chemicals etc etc, but it did move the staining of BF poo for me.

nea · 01/10/2010 11:10

I've found olive oil soap removes the stains from bgs - rub it on and then the stains come out in the wash. That said, I'm not that bothered about the stains either!

notcitrus · 01/10/2010 11:35

I use Nappysan when there's icky nappies, and my Bumgeniuses survived 18 months with it in every wash (or the Lidl Vanish equivanent) and being dried on radiators just fine. But the easiest thing is just to put up with a bit of staining until summer - they all looked a bit off-white for a while but a few days on the line in spring made them white again.

peachybums · 01/10/2010 22:07

Rainwater gets mine out, i leave mine on the line cos im lazy and when i bring them in stains are gone. You could try putting them in a bicket of rainwater if you cant hang them out, supposed to soften them too :)
