How often do I need the change reusable nappies?

Have 6 week old boy. Using Bumgenius and Itti Bittis.

How often should he have a nappy change and is there anything I can do to keep his skin drier?

add a fleece or minki liner on the top of the nappy, not in the pocket. Creats an extra stay dry layer and wicks moisture away to the microfibre.....change when soiled. I used to change after every breasfeed as they usually poop during or after a feed and since mine breasted every 90 mins or 2 hourly thats how often I changed. Or when they seemed to cry when they were fed, not tired etc and nothing else could be wrong with them, I changed them.

thanks, will get some of those to try.
We havebeen trying to change at least every 2 hours but his skin can be
quite damp so have been falling back on disposibles as hard to know which is more comfy for him - papery disposable or soft reusables but feeling damp.

We too changed everytime babe fed.
never used bubgenius and iiti bittis as they hadn't been invented but I wouldn't think you would need to change more than every 2 hours.

If you use fleece liners his bum will feel dry.

I wouldn't advise using barrier cream with washables as it can clog the fibres and reduce their absorbency.

Secondtimelucky · 28/09/2010 12:56

Is he getting a rash? I would use a fleece liner, but unless there are signs of irritation then slight dampness isn't necessarily something to worry about- I think it's disposable nappy adverts that have convinced us any hint of damp on the skin is a bad bad thing and must be stopped.

We had terrible rashes from disposables on DD (18 months) but have had none at all since we shifted to bumgenius when she was about 11 months.

QueenofDreams · 28/09/2010 12:57

Um AFAIK if the nappy is already fleece lined you can't use additional fleece liners. Apparently it creates a waterproof barrier. So the nappy will not absorb wee and will leak. I could be wrong there though.

Secondtimelucky · 28/09/2010 12:57

You definitely can on bumgenius - well, in a sample size of two my friend and I have done so successfully for 7 months each...

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 28/09/2010 13:00

Oh and we change for every poo, otherwise every 3 hours ish unless DS(7 weeks) cries and we can't find another reason. He seems to find it a welcome distraction Grin

it is fine to use fleece liners even if the nappy has a fleece inner, this stops staining of the nappy also(unless it goes over the sides etc)...fleece lets water through it but has a stay dry feeling. It doesnt repel water or it would be useless.Smile

have ordered my fleece liners - hopefully problem will be solved by tomorrows post!
