Will I need a double buggy?

I am pregnant with no 2 due in Jan. DS is just about to turn three. Do you think I am going to need a double buggy to get around? Just wanted to hear what other parents have done.

bumping as I will be in same position come april, and I wasn't planning on it, but am interested in what others say

Meglet · 26/09/2010 17:20

There are 22 months between mine. We still use the Phil & Teds now DS is nearly 4 and DD is 2. DS walks a lot but often hops in the back seat if he's tired or we are in a busy shop. I'm keeping the double until DS starts school next year - even then I'm tempted to keep it for days out over that winter Blush.

We walk a lot and I have no patience to wait for a dawdling / tantrumming toddler if we are trying to get somewhere, we'd have to leave the house at stupid o'clock if he was walking all the way.

Also think about whether you fancy dawdling at toddler speed in the rain / wind / snow? Confused

I have 2 yrs 7 months between mine. I have a side by side double, which has been great, from Mothercare. To be honest, dd doesn't go in it that much, but I feel much more comfortable knowing that she has the option, and I won't end up dragging/carrying her as well as pushing the pram.

Yeah that was what I was thinking. I am kicking myself for not getting something that could be adapted in the first place. I have a mama and papas pram that converts into a buggy although DS now uses a second hand mclaren that we have. Guess I will have to sell that one and get a new one.

Mine were the same age gap - ds nearly 3. I managed with a sling - and I only kept it in the car because to begin with ds would have a strop if he thought the baby was going in 'his' buggy. Once he got over that, he was happy to walk. I have a M&P Pramette thing, which has a step at the back (not actually designed for a toddler, but seems ok) which was useful - not nearly so cumbersome as those damned buggy board things. Now have a baby due in April, which will be a 20 month gap - hoping to get away with no double buggy again. Smile

hi chocolatestar - I have 19 months between mine, and because I don't drive relied heavily on my P&T Sport. It's brilliant and, like meglet, I still use it even now that DS1 is nearly four when I'm in a hurry and haven't time to dawdle on the way to pre-school.

And if I've only got one of them with me I still use the rear seat when going shopping as it makes for an extremely roomy basket.

puddlepuss · 26/09/2010 17:48

I have 22 months between dcs and never had a double buggy. I put the baby in the buggy while ds walked and then when he got too tired dd went into the sling and ds into the buggy.

It would have been useful to have one (we live in rural Brittany and do lots of walking) but for the length of time that ds would have needed it, it seemed a waste. I do like the Phil and Ted ones though - I used one when I was nannying and it was much more convenient than the double width one I had in another job.

chocolatestar · 26/09/2010 17:58

mmm I do drive so it will mainly be going around the town. I think I can get a buggy board for the pram I have so maybe I should try that first. Just been looking at the prices of double and nearly had a heart attack!

I have 17 months between DS1 and DS2 and 20 months between DS2 and DD. I mainly used fold up buggy and sling. Lots easier getting round shops and stuff.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 26/09/2010 18:41

I was thinking sling and buggyboard

ragged · 26/09/2010 18:48

I would try for sling + buggyboard system myself... BUT my actual experience was not getting them out of the buggy until over the age of 4yrs; plus the extra large shopping basket is handy.

BelligerentGhoul · 26/09/2010 18:51

Dd was 2 years and 3 months when dd2 was born. She walked everywhere (we don't drive). She soon got used to it and didn't whinge. Deffo need good waterproofs though!

nymphadora · 26/09/2010 18:59

I had 21 months between mine & the double was more trouble than it was worth. dd1 walked most of the time. I didn't have a car but did have use of my Mams and the double was a pain then too as it only just fit.

nonicknamemum · 26/09/2010 22:13

2 years 8 months between mine. We were given a second-hand double buggy but never used it. However, did tend to use the car unless only walking a very short distance.

Clary · 26/09/2010 22:19

No you really really won't need one.

I have 24 mo and 22 mo and never even slightly needed one.

Use sling and then buggy board but tbh for a 3yo I wouldn't even bother with those. Surely he will be walking everywhere by then? DS2 was perforce (as no-one was in buggy for him to hop behind!)

Clary · 26/09/2010 22:20

BTW tho we have a car and a good bus service so didn't tend to undertake 5-mile yomps on a daily basis, we do walk everywhere locally so distances of up to 2 miles.

sb6699 · 26/09/2010 22:31

I would have thought a buggy board would do.

I have exactly 2 years between mine and had a side by side that I used for the school run for the sake of convenience but after 6 months my 2yo insisted she wanted to walk everywhere so it was relegated to the garage.

If you do decide to get one, I would be thinking of second-hand. Its awfully expensive to buy a new one then find you only use it for a matter of weeks.

bruffin · 26/09/2010 22:33

I had 24 months between mine and definitely needed a double buggy, I used a sling for a couple of weeks and absolutely hated it, horrible things, but I didn't need a double by the time DS was 3.

simpson · 26/09/2010 22:38

I had 2.5yrs between my two and used a double for nearly a yr but I don't drive and do a lot of walking.

I could not have coped without my double tbh.

If any of you near West London my double is in shed doing nothing Grin as my two are now 5 & 2

chocolatestar · 27/09/2010 05:25

Sadly I am in Scotland. Fallen in love with the iCandy but would need to start selling my organs to afford it!

Good idea to think second hand, that might be a good way of getting one without spending too much.
