Washables on holiday - would I be mad to consider it?

Center Parcs for 5 nights (including an overnight stop on the way there. 5 kids.

We use bamboo pop-ins mostly (which take forever to dry) but I have 2 BG v3s and a Dream Dri. I have about £45 to spend on a few more nappies if necessary.

Mad? Anyone done it? Hmm

Which center parcs are you going to? IIRC the laundry at Longleat is miles from some of the apartments! Presume you will be in the pool quite a lot?

Ceolas · 26/09/2010 13:53

Sherwood. Been once but many years ago. Can't remember what the laundry's like.

Some people do it ive seen posts on here before. I HATE disposables with a passion but i must admit i think i may concider getting some gel free ones for our holidays in May as we are going overseas. If i was staying in this country i would def take my cloth nappies and bucket :)

Im thinking of taking mine (longhaul) Mainly for night thou- Pop in's with night booster's. But i would be handwashing- Am i stupid!!!

I've taken reusables on holiday with us before (but we were staying in a cottage that had a washing machine). The biggest problem we found was the amount of luggage space that they took up. I'd do it again for a short holiday, but if we were going away for longer than four or five days, I'd probably swith to disposables / part disposables, in order to free up more luggage space for clothes etc.

MrsJamin · 27/09/2010 13:08

It totally depends on the proximity of the washing facilities and where and how you can dry the things. I have done it in a holiday cottage but please, don't martyr yourself about it - one week of disposables isn't going to make any difference to the environment or your purse!

Ceolas · 27/09/2010 13:20

I won't know how near the laundry is until we get there. Maybe disposables for a week...

Go on, you need a holiday too!

craftynclothy · 27/09/2010 13:56

We did a week in a hotel in Morocco with terry squares when dd1 was 17 months old. We rinsed them in the bidet each night and washed some about halfway through the holiday iirc.

Ceolas · 27/09/2010 14:00

That's dedication crafty!

Actually, I just thought, I have some Tots Bots Potion which claims to be antibacterial at 30 degrees. I could hand wash them...

I'd take them. We did a static caravan holiday in cornwall in june and took cloth nappies with us. I didn't find it much faff but I guess it would depend how far the laundry was. Some villas have washing machines in them don't they? Don't think I'd do it if it would mean hand washing though!

tellyaddict · 15/10/2010 21:17

I took mine to Longleat last year when we did 5 days. Didn't want to waste any time in launderette so I hand rinsed and then popped them into the pail, took them home at end of the week and washed them a couple of times. I was absolutely determined not to use disposables.

This year we went for 8 days and I took disposables as that was just a wee bit too long for them to lie in the pail, and again didn't want to waste time in launderette whilst on holiday.

Do whatever you are most comfortable with, even it is disposables, but if you are determined to stick with cloth it can be done Smile.

thehairybabysmum · 15/10/2010 21:31

Do you seriously want to spend YOUR holiday handwashing re-useables (or sat in the launderette)??!! I used washables with both my two but had no qualms about using disposables on holiday.

Picture the scenario, you arrive at pool, change your child to swim, you then have to carry a potentially shitty nappy around for the rest of the day. Especially as you are considering spending up to £45 on new nappies. £5 will buy you a pack of disposables and you can traet yourselves to the lunch with the other £40!

Sorry, not meant to be harsh but life is too short!

tellyaddict · 15/10/2010 21:36

Oh I didn't handwash! I gave them a VERY quick rinse as they were going to be lying for up to 5 days lol!

Some people really are very uncomfortable with the whole disposable nappy thing. It's personal choice and I don't think any cloth user would slate or think badly of anyone switching to disposables whilst on holiday. Perhaps it's because it's a short break and the OP is pondering how feasible it is to do cloth for that time.

greensnail · 15/10/2010 21:39

I always used washables on holiday when I just had DD1. Now I have 2 in nappies I use disposables when we're on holiday as I don't have enough room in the car for nappies plus all the other junk we need.
Do you have enough nappies so you don't need to wash them while you're away? I used to wash every 5 or so days before DD2 arrived.

Mammamia2 · 17/10/2010 19:50

Have you tried flips? I think they are designed for holidays, fill your pants have them.

Ceolas · 17/10/2010 19:52

I took a load of prefolds. Was pretty Shock at how well we got on!

i have done this. in a static caravan. in may. in the uk. in the rain.

terry squares all the way, handwashed in the shower. at the time i was so proud of myself but now i look back and think god what were you thinking??? HmmGrin

Jetters · 18/10/2010 15:19

DO IT! Buy ebay cheapies... the seller 97kgallery is great and they are cut very similar to BG V3s, but with poppers.

Microfibre so they'd dry super quickly, you could handwash them overnight, they are about £3.50 each or ten for £35.

I love mine!
