What time should a 13-year old go to bed?

I am having a lot of arguments with DD about this. She says all her friends go to bed much later than her, but I say 'if you're tired in the morning, you need to go to sleep earlier.'
I would welcome any opinions or advice.
Thanks.

But of course DD's friends parents are lenient - I would call her bluff and speak to her friend's mum!

Sorry, my DD 14 is sitting with me now watching TV. When she went to senior school I gave her free bedtime and she goes whenever she wants, some nights at 9 others after 11. Hasn't been at 8.30 since she was 9.

DD 11 has now started senior school and also has free bedtime although as she gets up earlier I do tend to remind her to go to bed from 9.30 onwards.

9 pm, as long as she can handle getting up in the morning ok.

10 ish

DS (12) goes at about 11pm. I would have thought it depends a lot on what time she needs to get up in the morning and how much sleep she actually needs - they seem to vary a lot at this age, I think I read somewhere that pre/early teens actually need less sleep for some physiological reason than later teens.

My 13 yo boys are in bed at 9.30 on schoolnights although we're more relaxed at weekends.
They stay awake yapping some nights but bed any later means war in the mornings Hmm

My DS needs at least 10 hours to be human and DSS (who insists he needs less) is physically sick when he hasn't had enough sleep.

They are up at 7ish.
Follow your instincts and let her scowl thank you for it later.

TidyBush · 21/09/2010 22:49

DD2 (13) has to be in bed with lights out at 10:30pm on school nights and has free bedtime at weekends/holidays.

She knows that if we have any trouble getting her up in a morning then bedtime will be put back to 10pm.

dd1 (12) goes at 9 she has school in the morning Fridays / sat she may go later and is often up until 11 or so

bruffin · 21/09/2010 23:25

DD goes to bed when she is ready, which is usually between 8.30 to 9.30 . She is very good at going to bed when she is tired

tinky19 · 21/09/2010 23:29

I think at that age they should go to bed when they are ready (within reason). If she feels like shit terrible the next day she'll learn to go to bed earlier!

sharbie · 21/09/2010 23:37

again what bruffin said

cory · 22/09/2010 08:04

Also what bruffin said. My 13yo's "ready" also tends to be between 8.30 and 9.30 when she is well: when she has been going to sleep earlier, it has usually been because of depression, so not something I like to see really.

Also, there is no bedtime that could make dd not tired in the morning: like a lot of people in my family, she is not a morning person.
