Please help me...my 1 year old STILL wakes for a night feed!

Any advice welcome. bit of back ground for you:
I exclusively breastfed for 5 months, and had a nightmare getting her on the bottle, feeding solids is still an issue as she never eats more then a few mouthfuls & wants to feed herself, she's very small still (only weighs 16lbs & can still fit into 3-6 month colthes) but is a happy and very active 1 year old.
However she still wakes between 12 - 3 for a feed an won't go back to sleep till she's got it.
My question is how can i get her to cut this out? I've tried putting her to bed later & giving her food before she sleeps but she still wakes!
Is it normal for a small 1 year old to still be wanting a night feed? Sooo tired!

Mine was exactly the same, also small. I resorted to CC to sort out the earlier feeding issues. She only slept through at about a year, and even now (15 months) I frequently have to feed her back to sleep at about 5am.
Have you tried sleep feeding her before you go to bed? See if that works, then gradually bring that feed earlier and earlier, so that eventually it just merges with her bedtime feed.

Good luck.

Nothing helpful to add really, I am in same boat with 1yr (although he still wakes every 1-2 hours for a feed) who doesn't eat very much. The problem is, until you are absolutely sure that they are not hungry you have to feed them....
The tiredness is just awful isn't, sigh

I have a huge 1 year old who eats loads in the day, she still wakes every night, sometimes 3-4 times, and can be awake for 2 hrs. So no advice but lots of sympathy! I am constantly exhausted!

PomPotty · 21/09/2010 11:15

exactly, it's just like a newborn, only my DD who is now 2.7 was nothing like this, even as a newborn she only woke 2-3 a night and slept through at 3 months.... how is it possible for babies to be sooooooo different, it has really thrown us

Watching with interest because I could have written that OP.

I have a huge one too! He eats well during the day and then wakes 3/4 times a night, usually for milk. He goes back to sleep quickly though.

I've been giving him water for the past couple of nights in the hope that he will get out of the habit of waking up. He doesn't seem to mind much so it nust be to do with not being able to settle rather than food.

Is it bedtime yet?

Yes, it's normal for babies to wake for night feeds until well into toddlerhood. Just surrender to it, understand that it's normal, expect it, don't resent it.

Also...let her feed herself. Are you saying you are still trying to spoonfeed her? It is beyond time for her to be feeding herself with no help from you ever.

Still happening here with 11m ds2. And was the same with dd.

Ds2 wakes about 2-3 times a night at the moment.

Agree that you just have to accept it and remember that it will stop in the end. And then you'll miss it!!

callmemamma · 21/09/2010 21:38

No advice re sleeping but definitely let her feed herself!

I had big baby, I don't know if I'd do it if my DS had been tiny, but I only gave water in the night by the time he was 1.

I had a friend with a 3 year old still waking for milk and I thought that it was mental, so there was no more milk after teethbrushing!

Once he got used to the regime it, he slept a lot better.
