Wk 2 of potty training - weeing but poo accidents

Hi - My DD has been in knckers for a week and apart from a few accidents she has been great - she went to nursery and had accidents where she had poo-ed in her pants.

I thought it was due to hte nursery staff not paying enough attention but this weekend she has done the same to us.

We have had no wee accidents just poo - she doesn't poo at a set time and one time so I can't predict too much when she will do it.

One accident could have been a bit of a nightmare - just checked into 5* hotel - in garden, noticed tell tale sag in pants but when I got to the toliets it had gone! It has fallen out of trouser leg and was in the corridor

Any ideas of how to get it through to her that poos need to go in the potty too?

Gemmamay. Sorry no ideas for you as am looking for similar advice for my DS who has so far pooed in his baby brothers play nest, the ball pit and then on his bedroom carpet. The last one he did I met him enroute to the bathroom carrying it to put it in the toilet
Hope someone has some advice, but at least you have company

gemmamay · 06/09/2005 10:40

thanks - at least I am not alone!

Yesterday she pooed in her nappy when she was asleep and then this morning in pants whilst watching teletubbies! then she says 'wee wee now' whilst walking like JOhn Wayne!

Maybe it is that we ahve been talking about weeing all the time rather than poos?

Oh well at least it didn't roll out the trouser leg in public like previous occasions!

Found you gemmamay! Funny I didn't see this yesterday when I started my thread on precisely the same subject. Anyway, I will watch this thread as well as my own in case you get the answer first!

I have no idea about this either - dd has had a few poo accidents with the childminder but I'm more concerned about her being constipated (it's 2-4 days between poos at the moment). I'm not sure if she's drinking enough water in this weather - I just hope it will sort itself out.

I think it's important not to let your child know you're bothered about it. YOu don't want them to associate doing a poo with being a stressful experience.

Continue to praise good potty behaviour, and jsut deal matter-of-factly with poo in pants. Try taking the poo to the potty and putting it in there before flushing it, so they get the idea that that is where it should be.

It's obviously quite difficult for them to work out this whole where to poo conundrum. Try to stay patient!

ediemay · 06/09/2005 12:43

can I join the poo club? DS doing really well with wee but wants a nappy to poo in. HV told me her son used to poo on the windowsill - ours are a bit high. He's at nursery today for first time since we started potty scenario with 15,000 changes of clothes

Am v bored of our downstairs lav

Passionflower · 06/09/2005 12:54

Had this for 7 mths with DD2, stopped just before she turned three.

No real answer though, you've just got to live with it.

Swirl · 06/09/2005 15:02

This has probably been a one off but DS1 did a poo in the potty himself this morning whilst I was downstairs. I had come up as the unmissable smell of poo had wafted its way downstairs and I ran up to find a lovely dollop of poo in DS2's play nest, but no sign of DS1. Called his name and he shouted back "i'm doing a poo in the potty". And so he was, god bless him.
We had had a total disaster up to this point with 4 change of clothes by 11am and I had been ready to give up (day 4). What I think worked was he wanted a big Mickey Mouse sticker and I told him he could only have it if he did a poo in his potty. Big trouble now is I have no more of that particular sticker left! The other thing I have done (beware its gross) is I always emptied the contents of his nappy into the potty the last couple of weeks, and then let him empty the potty into the toilet. He loved this DH cant believe I did this but think it has helped connect the two in his brain. Mind you am still prepared for it all to go pear shaped again later.

my 3-year old has been very good with peeing in the toilet for a good ten months but seems to only have mastered the poos in the last month or so. She kept soiling herself and did not look bothered at all (I was!). A few weeks ago, all of a sudden, she announced she "was big now" and proceded to poo in the toilet on her own.
I feel she was not ready, as simple as that

gemmamay · 07/09/2005 12:06

Oh my goodness - it looks like living with it is the only option!

Or the eternal parenting mantra of hope!

Do you think I should put her back in nappies (continuing to take her to the toilet for wees and attempt to get poos) and try again in a few months?

OP posts:
Lonelymum · 07/09/2005 12:13

I share your feeling of dismay that the general message seems to be that we will have to simply wait for our children to want to poo in the right place. I was hoping for a more proactive suggestion.

I think it would be a shame if you put your dd into nappies again a, from what you say, she seems to have quite good control of her wees. You have only been potty training for a week 9I have been at it 4 weeks) so don't give up hope yet.

gemmamay · 07/09/2005 13:07

It is a bit disheartening! Isn't it - if we didn't get answer at least we know we are not the only ones running the risk of seeing poos in public everytime we venture out of the house!

OP posts:
mammaitaliana1 · 09/09/2005 14:53

i personally stopped using nappies at all (and she did have a few accidents at nursery, but hey, they are used to it so what the hec) apart from when i was going out and did not want to spend my leisure time worrying an accident might happen.
LIFE IS TOO SHORT![WINK]

gemmamay · 09/09/2005 17:16

OK - been a bit slack on the posting but 2 dry days at nursery and a poo in the potty last night!

Hooray!! I have a genius child!!

just waqnted to add that it took DD about 5-6 weeks to truely get the hang. She knew it was supposed to go in the potty but kept on saying she needed to go every 2 mins and then sitting down, giving it about 15 secs and getting back up till she eventually had an accident because we didn't beleive her any more. Obvoiusly she just hadn't got the hang of letting go. It suddenly seems to have clicked in the last week and she has not had an acident for a week, and the pull ups are also dry at night (although I think we'll leave that for a little while yet.) I just wanted to share this with you and say there is light at the end of the tunnel and it may be much sooner than you think

tipsey · 10/09/2005 08:12

Have you seen these potty reward charts:

www.rewardboard.co.uk/catalogue/index.php?cPath=21_27

They seem like just the job to me

Bliss2 · 10/09/2005 09:28

I bought a chart from www.rewardboard.co.uk and in conjunction with my son's nursery he was pretty much trained within a week. Once he got 6 stickers he got a special treat The charts really helped him focus on the job in hand

magnolia1 · 10/09/2005 15:12

Alison222

That is excatly what we have been through with Katie (27 months) over the past few days, Constantly asking for a poo but not going. Today she only asked 3 times before going on the toilet so it does get better as you said {smile}

going4potty · 12/09/2005 23:04

hi, i too am joining the poo in pants brigade. Potty trained (wees) down pat (hee hee) but still pooing in pants. Especially public places and he tells me once the job is done! anybody got a magic wand (grin)

bobbybob · 13/09/2005 03:28
